Andre Thierig, the plant manager at Teslas Gigafactory Berlin, announced on X that the German facility will expand. After a record start to the year, the site will lift vehicle output and grow its local workforce.

Record-setting first quarter prompts expansion

According to Thierig, the Giga Berlin team produced more than 61,000 Model Y vehicles in Q1 of 2026, setting a new production record and averaging nearly 4,700 vehicles per week.

To build on this momentum and address rebounding demand in Europe, Tesla will increase Model Y production by 20 percent starting in July 2026.

Hiring ramp and permanent roles

Boosting output by 20 percent will require additional staffing.

Giga Berlin plans to hire approximately 1,000 new employees, with onboarding beginning in May. This schedule gives incoming factory-floor workers roughly two months to train and integrate ahead of the July ramp.

In addition, Tesla will convert 500 temporary employees into permanent, full-time positions to provide job security and retain experienced operators.
