Elon Musk hinted at where vehicle connectivity is headed, stating that “all cars will have Starlink in the future.” A day later, Tesla’s Robotaxi account shared photos of the first Cybercab featuring Starlink hardware built directly into the vehicle.
Musk Says Cars Will Eventually Use Starlink
Musk’s remark addressed cars in general, but it is especially pertinent to Tesla as SpaceX hardware is already being integrated into Cybercab. He argued that Starlink will ultimately be needed to deliver the bandwidth connected vehicles will demand. He cited the ability to watch 4K video as an example, though current cellular networks already support that use case. The key benefits for Starlink would be redundancy and coverage in remote areas.
Today’s Teslas use cellular modems for internet access, with AT&T providing service in the United States. Newer vehicles include 5G-capable cellular hardware, indicating cellular connectivity remains part of the plan. The shift to 5G will add bandwidth and help when 4G networks are eventually decommissioned. In the past, 3G-only Teslas lost connectivity when operators shut down 3G service.
