A Look at Tesla's Most Advanced Climate Controls in the Model Y L

Tesla is adding the longer-wheelbase Model Y L to the U.S. lineup, and the focus on in-cabin comfort steps up accordingly. The three-row, six-seat crossover brings interior features intended to keep all occupants comfortable on extended trips.

SawyerMerritt recently posted a hands-on look at the updated climate controls while test-driving a North American unit on X:

“The Model Y L has a little row of icons on the right side of the climate screen so the front passenger can more quickly jump to whatever row they want to control.”

Three-zone climate layout with dedicated third-row controls

While the basic climate interface will look familiar to recent Tesla drivers, the Model Y L is the first in the lineup to separate settings into three distinct zones. Previous three-row versions of the Model X and Model Y grouped rear controls together, but the Model Y L provides a dedicated interface for the third row.

At the top of the touchscreen, the driver or front passenger can select front, middle, or rear to access options for that area. To speed up switching, a vertical strip of seat-layout icons appears along the right edge of the climate card.

The front row uses the same air swing system introduced with the new (Juniper refresh) Model Y. In the middle row, passengers can aim airflow from the screen-level vents or the B‑pillar vents, and choose whether second-row ventilation comes from the screen-level vents or from underneath. The Model Y L also adds ventilated second-row seats; while the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and standard Model Y offer heated second-row seating, this is the first Tesla with actively cooled second-row captain’s chairs.

Third-row vents and in-screen controls

Third-row passengers get heated seats (no cooling) and dedicated air outlets built into the C‑pillars. The now-discontinued Model X also had third-row vents, but they were non-powered and required manual adjustment. In the Model Y L, power controls are integrated into the central touchscreen.

Middle-row occupants can adjust climate settings via the rear touchscreen. Passengers in the third row will need someone in the first or second row to change fan speed or seat heat.

This expanded climate system arrives as Tesla launches the 6-seat Model Y L in the U.S. with an exclusive Launch Series trim. Display vehicles are already appearing in Tesla stores and showrooms across the U.S., with customer deliveries planned for September. Alongside features unique to North American Model Y L builds, this detailed climate configuration completes the offering.
