Tesla has confirmed it will introduce the larger Model Y L in Australia and New Zealand in 2026, following its debut in China last year. The stretched, six-seat version of the world’s best-selling EV was announced in a press release from Tesla Australia and New Zealand.
Pricing and specific launch dates for these markets have not yet been disclosed. Recent Australian Design Rule (ADR) certification documents outline what buyers can expect from the Model Y L in these regions.
Supersized Best Seller
The Model Y L is more than a cabin update; it has a larger body to fit a third row of seats. It measures 4,969mm in length, which is 177mm longer than the standard Model Y, largely due to a wheelbase stretched by 150mm.
Inside, the layout is 2+2+2. The second row replaces the bench with two independent captain’s chairs that include heating, ventilation, and power adjustment. The two-seat third row also includes standard heating.
Performance and Range
For Australia and New Zealand, variants are expected to mirror the Premium Long Range AWD configuration. Regulatory filings confirm a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined listed output of 378kW.
With a battery pack in the 84kWh range, European approval documents indicate the aerodynamic Model Y L could deliver up to 681 kilometers of driving range on the strict WLTP testing cycle.
Filling the Void
The Model Y L addresses a significant gap since the flagship Model X was withdrawn from these right-hand-drive markets in 2020, leaving no three-row Tesla option locally.
Its 2026 arrival provides a direct, highly practical competitor among the growing field of electric family SUVs in these markets.
