Regulatory progress in Europe for Teslas Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software has accelerated, raising the likelihood of a rollout in Southern Europe after years of European owners watching North American drivers use FSD in city traffic.
According to X user @MirkoMontagna0, who contacted Servedio Gaetano, General Director at the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, on LinkedIn, Tesla has officially applied for FSD approval in Italy (via @TeslaNewswire). Gaetano replied confirming that Tesla submitted FSD homologation paperwork to his office just a few days ago, and the documentation is now in the analysis phase.

The European Approval Wave Speeds Up
Rather than initiating a new process, the application asks Italy to recognize the existing FSD type approval granted by Dutch regulators in April. The Netherlands was the first country in the bloc to officially approve FSD, creating a framework that other EU members can follow.
Using this approach, approvals have broadened in recent months: Belgium and Denmark recently approved FSD for public use, following earlier deployments in Estonia and Lithuania.
A Growing Divide on European Roads

Despite Italys swift review, an EU-wide rollout is not seamless. Sweden has opposed a broader block approval. The Swedish Transport Administration recently urged the EU to reject Tesla FSD, citing the softwares manual Speed Offset feature as a potential risk for over-speeding.
Even with those objections, momentum continues. With Italy now in the analysis phase, local drivers are closer to letting their cars handle daily commutes.
