Tesla appears to be finalizing preparations for the debut of its dedicated autonomous vehicle. Records from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles indicate the company has begun adding the purpose-built Cybercab to its commercial Robotaxi fleet ahead of this week’s launch event in Austin.

According to data from the Texas Autonomous Fleet Tracker, 45 new Cybercab vehicles have been registered with the Texas DMV so far today under Tesla’s Robotaxi operating fleet.

The influx of official registrations comes just days before Tesla holds its official Cybercab launch event in Austin on Thursday, September 3.

Introducing the Commercial Robotaxi Backbone

The Cybercab is intended to serve as the long-term backbone of Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing network, eventually replacing the modified Model Y fleet now in service. This dedicated two-seater is engineered without a steering wheel, pedals, or other traditional controls.

Public sightings have accelerated across Texas in recent weeks. Production units were spotted showing off multi-color RGB front light bars in downtown Austin, and recent sightings have also provided a first look at the Cybercab’s split-screen UI.

While registering 45 vehicles doesn’t necessarily signal that public commercial rides will open immediately, it confirms Tesla is preparing a substantial fleet — potentially for demonstrations at this week’s event. Attendees will likely have the chance to take fully autonomous demo rides in the Cybercab on public streets around Austin during the launch, an experience Tesla employees have been enjoying at Giga Texas for weeks now.

Austin Set to Lead Public Rollout

The timing aligns with Tesla’s recent infrastructure expansion. Over the past week, Tesla expanded Robotaxi geofences in Dallas and Austin, pushing coverage across larger metropolitan areas. Operations and service areas are expected to scale even faster once the Cybercab officially launches and begins commercial service.

Tesla has already been testing steering wheel-less Cybercabs in Austin for months, making the Texas capital a natural launchpad. Austin hosted the initial beta deployment of the Robotaxi service last summer, positioning it as the frontrunner for the first wave of commercial Cybercab passenger pickups once public operations begin. With 45 units already registered and certified through state databases, Thursday’s reveal could mark the Cybercab’s transition from private testing to real-world fleet deployment.
