Tesla’s IFTTT-Style Automations Ready, Hidden by Feature Flag

Tesla’s Automations feature appears poised to roll out beyond China. Maciej Wilczyński (@maciej) posted a video on X showing the app in English, noting it looks “fully polished and present in latest firmware revisions,” but is hidden behind a feature flag. With help from @CoilShift, he enabled it to demonstrate the stock experience without modifications.
Tesla Android Project creator Michał Gapiński (@mikegapinski), who collaborates with Wilczyński, also enabled Automations on another vehicle and shared a walkthrough, comparing it to “the first version of Shortcuts on iOS.”
Automations first became available to owners in China earlier this year. The English interface suggests Tesla is preparing a wider release.
What Tesla’s Automations Feature Does
Automations follows familiar “If This, Then That” logic. Drivers pick a trigger, optionally set conditions, and then chain one or more actions.
In Wilczyński’s demo, you tap “Create an automation,” select a trigger such as the driver’s seatbelt being buckled, add a condition like the passenger seatbelt remaining unbuckled, and choose an action, for example setting media volume to 9.3. Triggers and actions are grouped by category with a search field, and delays can be inserted between actions.
Saved examples include a voice command “Child Mode” that enables both child locks and the window lock, and another that announces “Gear Shifted” when drive or reverse is engaged. Each automation is shown as a card that can be toggled off without deleting it.
Current limitations apply: automations run only when the center display is on, they cannot be triggered while Autopilot or FSD is active, and actions that control FSD are unavailable—although you’ll soon be able to do that with Grok.

Multiple triggers can be combined with any action or set of actions. Triggers also serve as conditions.

A Holiday Update Candidate, Alongside CarPlay
With the feature translated and merely gated by a flag, Automations is a strong contender for this year’s Holiday Update, Tesla’s largest software release of the year. It is unlikely to arrive before then.
Apple CarPlay could debut alongside it. A report last fall said Tesla was working on an official CarPlay implementation, but it did not make last year’s Holiday Update. Reports earlier this year indicated CarPlay support was still in progress and that Tesla was working directly with Apple on deeper integration. Since then, developments have been quiet, making December the next realistic window for both features to land.
