Over-the-air updates are routine for Tesla owners, but they typically apply to the vehicle itself. In a rare hardware-focused move, Tesla has begun rolling out a firmware update for its portable Mobile Connector charging units.
The update was flagged by Tesla community member @koalafiedtesla, who posted a screenshot on X showing the installation notice on their vehicle display and said:
“Never heard of a Tesla mobile connector getting a software update but thats interesting nonetheless.”
How Tesla’s Mobile Connector Updates Work
Unlike the vehicle or Tesla’s other residential charging hardware, the Mobile Connector does not include built-in cellular or Wi‑Fi. Instead, the vehicle serves as the intermediary: when the car is plugged in using the Mobile Connector, it downloads the firmware over its own internet connection, stores it, and then transfers the package to the connector.
This particular rollout appears to target Gen 2 Mobile Connector units. It’s not yet clear whether other versions, such as Tesla’s Gen 3 Mobile Connector with PowerShare capabilities, will receive the same update.
The patch installs quietly without requiring a reboot or any manual steps. Once the download starts, the vehicle simply shows an alert that a charge connector update is in progress.
Portable Trickle Charging and Home Options
The Mobile Connector is a versatile accessory for “trickle charging” at home or while traveling. Plugged into a standard 120‑volt household outlet, it draws 12 amps and adds about 3 to 4 miles of range per hour. When connected to a 240‑volt NEMA 14‑50 outlet, it can draw up to 32 amps and deliver roughly 30 miles of range per hour.

Although updates for the Mobile Connector are uncommon due to its simplicity, they do occur.
