Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing network is expanding rapidly. The Q2 earnings report and Wednesday's earnings call detailed progress on the Robotaxi program, confirming that driverless Model Ys operating on the network have surpassed 380,000 fully unsupervised miles. Across those autonomous miles, not a single notable road accident was reported.
"I'd like to state that the Robotaxi program has been operating extremely well, especially in terms of safety. The program has had an impeccable safety record. We have driven more than 380,000 mi of unsupervised Robotaxi, now across six cities in two different states."
"more than 10% a week in terms of miles driven. So, it's a […] very high compound growth rate."
Combining fully unsupervised operation with rides that include a safety monitor, Tesla is quickly approaching 2.5 million cumulative paid Robotaxi miles. Model Y robotaxis are already running early builds of FSD v15, the next major architectural upgrade to Full Self-Driving that is expected to launch publicly later this year or early next year with 10x more parameters than v14.
Active Robotaxi Markets and Near-Term Targets
The Robotaxi service is currently available in seven regions:
- Austin: A mix of unsupervised Model Y rides and rides with safety monitors
- Bay Area: Safety monitor Model Y rides only
- Dallas: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
- Houston: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
- Miami: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
- Orlando: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
- Tampa: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
Expansion is accelerating, with unsupervised Robotaxi rides launching in Orlando and Tampa this week following a launch in Miami earlier this month. Now that the fleet is officially running FSD v15, it’s only expected to scale faster from here.
Tesla’s Q2 shareholder deck identified the following cities as next in line for Robotaxi expansion, with preparations already underway:
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Phoenix, Arizona
Tesla has already filed permits for 5,000 Robotaxi vehicles in Nevada and laid out extensive expansion plans for Arizona. New Orleans is another likely target, as Tesla was recently spotted testing Robotaxi vehicles in the city.
Cybercab Steps Up as the Fleet Workhorse
Retrofitted Model Ys handle operations today, but the purpose-built Cybercab is positioned to become the backbone of the service. Mass production of the steering wheel-less two-seater began in April at Gigafactory Texas, and engineering test drives on public roads took place throughout the second quarter.
Tesla recently began testing steering wheel-less Cybercabs in Austin. According to Tesla’s Q2 earnings report, it has officially kicked off employee rides in autonomous Cybercabs across the Giga Texas campus. These employee rides and steering wheel-less road validation are key steps before driverless Cybercabs roll out to the public across expanding Robotaxi markets.
