Tesla Model S/X Signature Edition Orders Require No-Resale Agreement
Tesla is implementing a resale restriction for the upcoming ultra-limited Signature Edition Model S and Model X Plaid. New order documents require buyers to sign a "No Resale Agreement" before delivery.
The policy targets gray-market flipping of these vehicles. Per the agreement, buyers "will not sell or otherwise attempt to sell the vehicle within the first year following your vehicle’s delivery date."
Heavy Penalties for Flippers
If this term is violated, Tesla may pursue "liquidated damages from you in the amount of $50,000 or the value received as consideration for the sale or transfer, whichever is greater." The company also reserves the right to refuse future vehicle sales to those who violate the agreement.
Owners who have a legitimate, unforeseen need to sell within the first year must notify Tesla in writing. Tesla holds a right of first refusal and may repurchase the vehicle at the original price, minus $0.25 per mile driven and costs for reasonable wear and tear. The company aims to ensure that the 350 units—250 Model S and 100 Model X—go to enthusiasts rather than speculators seeking to capitalize on the rarity and recent price hikes on the standard Plaid inventory.
The "Luxe Package" Trap
Even after the one-year period, certain included benefits will not transfer to a subsequent owner. The Signature Edition includes the "Luxe Package," which provides lifetime Full Self-Driving (Supervised), free Supercharging, four years of Premium Service, and Premium Connectivity for the life of the vehicle.
The agreement specifies: "The Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Free Supercharging and Premium Connectivity will not transfer with the vehicle and will terminate once the ownership of the Model S, or Model X is transferred." Maintenance and tire protection plans do transfer, but the software features stay with the first owner. The model’s sticker price is $159,420.
A Sunset Celebration in May
These vehicles conclude a 14-year manufacturing run for the Model S and Model X. Tesla officially closed custom orders for both models at the end of March, and standard inventory is quickly running out. The Signature Edition features unique "Garnet Red" paint, gold-accented badging, and other exclusive elements.
Tesla is planning a formal celebration event in May to mark the end of Model S and Model X production. The Fremont factory is set to shift focus to mass-market projects such as the Optimus humanoid robot.
