Tesla’s vehicles have featured a panoramic glass roof since the early days of the Model S. The only current exceptions are the Model Y Standard and Cybercab. While the expansive glass enhances the cabin’s airy, minimalist feel, it has also posed heat-management challenges in hot summer climates. Tesla has even published a patent that could one day use the glass roof to help cool the cabin.
Until now, owners typically relied on third-party clip-in screens to reduce heat intrusion.
Tesla has officially listed a premium, factory-integrated, manual retractable sunshade for the Model Y in the Tesla China Shop, with sales beginning on June 4, 2026. The accessory is priced at 1,499 RMB (~$220 USD) in China.
Seamless Integration
Unlike many aftermarket options that use a folding mesh panel you have to unclip and store in the trunk, Tesla’s sunshade is built around a permanent, low-noise reel-type roller-blind mechanism. It preserves the minimalist look of the interior while providing shade on hot days. The shade includes a metallic-textured grab handle and uses the same headliner fabric as the vehicle for a cohesive appearance.
Compatible Vehicles
Although it is currently available only in China, the sunshade is not limited to the Model Y L or the redesigned Model Y. It is offered for all 2020+ Model Ys, including the redesigned version in 2025.
To order, customers must sign in to the Tesla store when the product goes live on June 4th so Tesla can provide the correct sunshade for each vehicle.
Side-Airbag Compatible
The product addresses a key safety concern with some third-party roof frames: interference with side-curtain airbags. The shop listing states that the retractable shade has passed comprehensive vehicle airbag point-explosion testing and real-world road validation.
This certification confirms that the shade’s structural frame will not obstruct occupant safety systems during a severe side-impact collision.
Professional or DIY Installation
Because of the size and structure of the integrated frame, installation requires at least two people. Owners can install it themselves, or opt for professional installation.
For anyone uneasy about removing interior trim clips, scheduling an appointment with a local Service Center after the product arrives is recommended. Installation is not included and will incur an additional fee for those who choose professional service.
Other Markets
The sunshade is launching first in China, a market known for hot summers and strong demand for vehicle customization. It is very likely to become available in additional regions in the coming weeks or months, and a version for the Model 3 may eventually follow.
