Tesla Improves Driver Monitoring System With Better Eye Tracking

Tesla has begun deploying a small software update that clarifies a recent FSD change. In the release notes for software update 2026.14.6.7, an enhancement to the cabin camera has been moved from the “upcoming improvements” section to the list of active features.
The notes specify that it improves “driver monitoring system sensitivity with better eye gaze tracking, eye wear handling, and higher accuracy in variable lighting conditions."
Clearing Up Release Note Confusion
Although this appears to be new in update 2026.14.6.7, it actually arrived earlier. The official @Tesla_AI account on X explained that “this was released in a previous update, but wasn't highlighted in release notes.”
That means vehicles on update 2026.14.6.6 or 2026.14.6.7 already have the enhanced attention-tracking capabilities enabled. The core Full Self-Driving build remains 14.3.3.
It remains unclear why Tesla chose not to increment the FSD version with this point release. It could be because, beyond correctly classifying the eye-tracking improvements, this update only includes minor FSD changes that didn’t warrant a new version number. Alternatively, it might simply contain bug fixes for new Spring 2026 Software Update features that also needed to be delivered to FSD users.
Better, Less Intrusive Driver Monitoring
The upgraded eye tracking supports Tesla’s broader effort to improve in-cabin attention monitoring. When FSD v14.3.3 first rolled out with software update 2026.14.6.7 last month, it introduced the Spring 2026 Update features to the FSD branch and relaxed the in-cabin driver monitoring system, making audio alerts less aggressive as long as the driver’s eyes are on the road. Better eye tracking should reinforce that behavior.

With more accurate eye-gaze estimation and better handling of sunglasses and poor lighting, the system can more reliably verify attentiveness and reduce nags. The improved eye tracking and attention leeway in FSD v14.3.3 were recently part of the world’s first fully autonomous, coast-to-coast journey across Canada with zero human interventions.

As Tesla’s planned global FSD expansion gathers momentum, especially in the EU, robust driver monitoring will be essential to satisfy local regulators. Now that improved eye tracking is officially implemented, other “upcoming improvements” in the latest notes include pothole avoidance and expanding the neural network’s core reasoning beyond destination handling.
