Tesla appears poised to introduce Full Self-Driving (FSD) version 14 in China, based on recent updates to the Model 3 and Model Y Owner's Manuals. The timing coincides with a major sales surge from Giga Shanghai, creating momentum for a software-focused relaunch.
Introducing Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD)
The updated manual indicates that in China, FSD v14 will be branded as "Tesla Assisted Driving”, abbreviated as "TAD". The region has seen alternate naming before; when the technology first launched in the country, it was called "Urban Road Autopilot Assistance."
The manual also details new speed profiles unique to FSD v14, giving drivers more control over how the system behaves on the road. Options include "Standard," "Hurry," “Mad Max” and "Sloth". Sloth mode allows the vehicle to drive slightly below the speed limit to emphasize a more cautious and comfortable ride, and it came out with FSD v14.1 last fall.
The Technical Leap of v14
FSD v14 marks a notable advancement over the software currently offered in China. Although it does not yet include the 10-billion-parameter model delayed to FSD v15, version 14 is built on a 1-billion-parameter architecture. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, FSD v14 is already "much safer than a human," with the objective of making it orders of magnitude safer over time.
In the latest v14.3.2 iteration, one standout change is the unification of several AI models. The company has synchronized the systems behind FSD, Actually Smart Summon (ASS), and the Robotaxi platform. As a result, capabilities like Summon are becoming more reliable and intelligent by sharing the same high-level logic used for complex street navigation.
Navigating Local Data Laws
The path to this release has been gradual in China. While FSD v13 briefly reached a small set of Hardware 4 (HW4) owners, local data regulations limited broader availability. To address this, the company established a local AI training center earlier this year so that Chinese driving data is processed within national borders.
Whether v14 will clear all regulatory requirements for a wide rollout remains to be seen. The company is also working on "FSD v14 Lite" for older Hardware 3 vehicles, which is expected to expand internationally later this summer. If TAD (FSD v14) launches broadly in China, it would demonstrate that its vision-based approach can manage the dense and unique traffic conditions of major Chinese cities.
Whether it’s called FSD, TAD, or just "Self-Driving," the aim is unchanged: a safer, more convenient driving experience. With the owner's manual already updated, it may be only weeks before early Chinese users try Sloth mode and other v14 features in their vehicles.
