Over the weekend, invitees to the Model S and Model X Signature Edition delivery event were notified that the gathering, originally planned for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, has been postponed.

The message to invitees stated: "The Signature Edition Delivery Event scheduled for May 12, 2026, has been postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience." Tesla added that a "new event date and additional details will be shared" when available, without offering a reason for the change.

A Diplomatic Delay?

Community speculation points to international diplomacy rather than production issues. Reports indicate the White House invited Elon Musk to join U.S. President Donald Trump on a trip to Beijing this week to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

As this would be the first U.S. presidential visit to China in a decade, preparations for the trip would overlap with the delivery event, prompting a postponement.

The Last of the Legends

The delay is not due to vehicle availability. Over the weekend, Tesla confirmed on X that the final production run at the Fremont factory has been completed. "The last Model S & the last Model X have been produced at Fremont Factory. 14 years of history for Model S, 11 years for Model X," the company noted.

This limited run consists of 250 Model S and 100 Model X units, offered to buyers by invitation only last month. The $159,420 "Signature Editions" include a Garnet Red exterior, carbon ceramic brakes with gold calipers, unique gold badging, Signature Edition wordmarks, and other bespoke touches, all on Tesla’s Plaid platform. They also come with the non-transferable Luxe Package.

Transitioning to the Robotaxi Era

The company officially closed standard orders at the end of March, and remaining inventory has been clearing out. The Model X became the fastest-selling used vehicle in the U.S. as production wound down.

Tesla is repurposing the floor space previously used for the Model S and X production lines to manufacture the Optimus humanoid robot. These 350 final units serve as the capstone to roughly 750,000 Model S and X vehicles produced.
