Tesla Energy Wins License to Supply Electricity in the U.K.

Tesla is broadening its presence in the United Kingdom. On Thursday, the country’s energy regulator, Ofgem, granted Tesla Energy Ventures a license to supply electricity to British homes (via Reuters).
The approval follows an application that began last July and positions the Texas-based company to compete with established household suppliers such as Octopus Energy, British Gas, and EDF. The timing comes as British consumers have faced heightened concerns over rising energy bills following recent global conflicts.
A New Era for Tesla Energy in Britain
Tesla is not new to the British power grid. Another subsidiary, Tesla Motors Limited, already holds an electricity generation license in the country. Many Tesla owners use the Powerwall home battery with solar panels to charge their electric vehicles, and under this setup, owners can sell surplus energy back to the grid.
With the new supply license, Tesla can leverage its solar and battery storage business to deliver a more integrated experience. It also creates an opportunity to expand its solar and Powerwall lease programs in the U.K., potentially bundling hardware with electricity supply. This vertical integration aims to manage the energy ecosystem from generation through consumption.
Diversifying the Business Model
The energy division’s growth comes at a pivotal time. While Tesla’s vehicle sales in Britain fell 8.9% year-on-year in 2025, the energy business has been a major bright spot globally. Tesla Energy has posted record sales in recent quarters, with the U.S. and Australia currently its largest markets.
The U.K. now looks set to join that group of high-growth regions. As the company encounters stronger competition from cheaper Chinese car brands and shifts focus toward AI and robotics, a stable, recurring revenue stream from home energy utility could help offset volatility in the auto market.
According to Reuters, the U.K. government is under pressure to provide support for energy costs if current global tensions persist beyond July, when many regulated tariffs are due to expire. A new entrant like Tesla could shake up the market just as consumers need it.
By becoming an official electricity supplier, Tesla moves a step closer to Musk’s vision of a sustainable energy future in which every home functions as its own small power plant.
