Tesla Upgrades Cybertruck Underbody With Carbon Fiber

Tesla frequently implements running production changes to boost efficiency and durability without waiting for model-year refreshes. A recent update replaces the Cybertruck’s stamped aluminum underbody panels with composite carbon fiber trays.

The change was spotted by Coleton Guerin (@OutofSpecDetail), a creator on the Out of Spec automotive channel, while detailing a newly delivered Cybertruck. He shared on X:

“When did @cybertruck get carbon fiber underbody panels? Working on a brand new CyberBeast and noticed the carbon trays both front and rear, right under the motors”

Extra Durability and Airflow Gains

Tesla’s lead Cybertruck engineer, Wes Morrill (@wmorrill3), responded to confirm the running production change and explain the rationale:

“It’s a new material. Testing showed it to be more durable than the aluminum while being lower weight and cost. Also slight efficiency improvement since we can better form the areas around the bolts to keep the underbody airflow cleaner than what stamped aluminum allows.”

Switching from stamped aluminum to molded carbon fiber addresses several engineering needs at once. The composite can be formed with smoother contours around mounting bolts and underbody structures, which helps reduce turbulence beneath the chassis and yields small aerodynamic gains at highway speeds.

The trays also improve impact resistance against road debris and off-road strikes without adding unnecessary mass or the cost of Tesla’s Terrestrial Armor Package for off-roading. Because carbon fiber trays are lighter and cheaper to produce at scale, the change enhances vehicle range and manufacturing efficiency.

Continuous Production Tweaks and Fleet Support

Rolling hardware improvements are standard practice on Tesla’s lines, arriving as soon as validation is complete and parts supply is in place.

This underbody update follows major safety recognition for the Cybertruck, which was recently named the safest pickup truck of 2026 across both electric and gas-powered segments.

Tesla is also supporting earlier builds: Tesla recently extended the Cybertruck PCS warranty to 8 years to address early Power Conversion System failures on pre-2026 models, offering full repair reimbursements for owners who previously paid out of pocket.
