Tesla Model Y L Immersive Sound X

As the six-seater Model Y L rolls out to additional markets, owners have discovered a new audio setting called "Immersive Sound X." The feature signals an upgrade to the vehicle’s in-car entertainment.

This capability appears to be exclusive to the Model Y L and has not been observed on other models.

What is Immersive Sound X?

According to @electricfuture5, the vehicle’s menu states: "Immersive Sound X uses sound eXtraction to place the listener in front of a detailed soundstage within an Immersive space." It also notes: "The size of the immersive space can be adjusted using the immersive slider to match individual preferences. When set to Auto, immersion automatically adapts based on the type of media being played."

Although it resembles high-end spatial audio such as Dolby Atmos, it is likely an advanced software filter. Because the system does not receive distinct audio for each channel, it is likely taking a standard stereo signal and applying "sound extraction" to simulate a 3D environment—similar to Dolby Pro Logic and presumably tuned for the vehicle’s hardware.

The interface includes an immersion slider that lets listeners scale the perceived size of the virtual soundstage, enabling a more tailored presentation from expansive to intimate.

The new "X" variant may leverage the Model Y L’s upgraded hardware. This version of the SUV includes 18 speakers and a subwoofer, which is three more speakers than the rest of the Model Y lineup. The car also features more microphones, which could be used to calibrate the soundstage in real-time.

Tesla’s Existing Immersive Sound Feature

The existing Immersive Sound feature is designed to widen the soundstage and create a surround-like effect by applying echo and reverb, making the cabin feel larger.

It offers granular levels from low to high. While it can complement cinematic music, many drivers turn it off for podcasts or talk programming where an expansive stage can make voices sound "hollow." Immersive Sound X could address this with its "Auto" mode, which adjusts immersion based on the content.

Model Y L Availability

The Model Y L is Tesla’s first family-focused SUV, featuring a 150mm longer wheelbase and a 2-2-2 seating layout. After being exclusive to China for nearly a year, it officially launched in Australia and New Zealand last week.

The vehicle has received EU type approval and was recently approved for sale in South Korea, pointing to a broader rollout. In North America, Elon Musk has said the three-row, six-seat model will not arrive in the U.S. until late 2026, if it arrives at all.

As the company continues to expand its software-driven features, Immersive Sound X illustrates a strategy to distinguish premium variants. Whether it will become available on other models remains unclear.
