Tesla Expands Robotaxi Geofences in Dallas and Austin

Tesla has deployed new map updates in two key Texas Robotaxi markets, widening coverage in both Dallas and Austin as driverless fleet testing ramps up and the Cybercab approaches launch.

The Robotaxi network now spans seven active U.S. markets:

• Austin: Mix of unsupervised Model Y rides and safety monitor rides
• Bay Area: Safety monitor Model Y rides only
• Dallas: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
• Houston: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
• Miami: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
• Orlando: Unsupervised Model Y rides only
• Tampa: Unsupervised Model Y rides only

Dallas Operating Area More Than Doubles

Last week marked the first boundary update in Dallas since Tesla first launching unsupervised Robotaxi rides in the city back in April.

According to details shared by @SawyerMerritt on X and geofence data from RobotaxiTracker, Dallas’s service area has expanded from 31 square miles to 81 square miles. The footprint extends west toward Irving and covers more of downtown Dallas, opening driverless commuting options to a much larger portion of the metro.

In Dallas, all Robotaxi trips remain fully driverless, with no safety driver behind the wheel or a monitor in the front passenger seat.

Austin Geofence Pushes Northward

In Tesla’s home city of Austin, the core test area is also growing. While Tesla expanded unsupervised Robotaxi operations across its Austin service area earlier this summer, the overall geofence had been unchanged for roughly 10 months.

That shifted after @WorldlyReviewer spotted new boundary lines in the Robotaxi app. The Austin geofence appears to have increased by roughly 9% in land area, adding coverage farther north along Interstate 35 and Highway 183 toward Pflugerville. The operating area grows from 244 to about 264 square miles.

With 264 square miles of coverage, Austin remains the largest active geofence in Tesla's autonomous network.

Preparing Infrastructure for the Cybercab Debut

These geographic changes coincide with operational updates; in recent weeks, Tesla has expanded Robotaxi operating hours and added more vehicles to its driverless fleet.

This expansion comes ahead of the Cybercab launch event set for September 3 in Austin. Tesla has already been testing fully autonomous, steering wheel-less Cybercabs in Austin for months, and broader Texas geofences prepare the way for the dedicated two-seater to begin public passenger service and gradually replace the retrofitted Model Ys currently in use.
