For the past year, Tesla has operated on a rolling amnesty basis, extending and expanding the FSD transfer capability each time it was brought up at a quarterly Earnings Call.

Now, Tesla is officially ending FSD Transfers on March 31st of this year. Two changes suggest this is a permanent change, and the program is unlikely to return, at least in North America.

Order Now, Delivery Later

Tesla has also changed the terms for the remainder of the program. Previously, Tesla required customers to take delivery by the end of the quarter to lock in the FSD transfer. This was a clear lever to boost quarterly delivery numbers, forcing buyers to rush into a new vehicle purchase before midnight on the final day of the quarter.

This time, the guidance has changed: you must place your order by March 31, 2026, but you can take delivery later. If this were just another end-of-quarter incentive, Tesla would demand delivery by March 31 to pad the Q1 stats, which are historically the weakest of the year.

By allowing deliveries to dip into Q2, Tesla is likely offering this as a last shot to customers as it sunsets the FSD Transfer program. This no longer appears to be a sales tactic, but a final opportunity for owners to transfer their license to another vehicle before the program ends.

Subscriptions are Here

The end of transfers aligns with Tesla’s recent announcement to stop selling FSD and switch it to a subscription-only service.

The last day to buy FSD is February 14, 2026, and thereafter it will be exclusively available as a monthly subscription. That means that there is no longer a license to transfer, so no new transferable licenses will be created. The fleet of transferable FSD vehicles is essentially capped with the end of the program.

This March 31st deadline effectively serves as the final off-ramp for legacy HW3 owners. If you miss the window, that license dies with your current vehicle, and your next Tesla will require a monthly subscription.

What Owners Need to Do

If you are sitting on an older Model S, 3, X, or Y with a purchased FSD package, the clock is ticking. You do not need to have the new car in your driveway by March 31st, but you must have a confirmed order in the system.

If you’re on the fence, you can read an article about whether or not you should purchase FSD — it goes over the pros and cons of both options in light of the purchase opportunity ending soon.

But in short, for owners of hardware 3 vehicles, this is most likely the most cost-effective upgrade path to a modern AI4 vehicle without losing your initial FSD investment — and gets you into a newer, more modern vehicle.
