Tesla and Google have partnered to address rising electricity prices and mounting grid constraints that are increasingly affecting the tech sector.
According to a report from Axios, the companies have launched Utilize, an industry coalition focused on improving energy affordability across the United States. As AI data centers scale up and broader electrification strains the lagging US power grid, the coalition aims to tap underused capacity rather than build new generation.
The Utilize Roster
The effort includes partners working on hardware and infrastructure for both grid-scale projects and household applications:
- Carrier: The global air conditioning and HVAC giant.
- SPAN: The smart electric panel company founded by former Tesla Energy executives.
- Sparkfund: An energy technology deployment services firm.
- Verrus: A data center facility developer.
Together, the group plans to work with state lawmakers, regulators, and utilities to accelerate adoption of battery storage and distributed energy resources, with an emphasis on affordability, reliability, and speed.
$180 Billion Savings
The coalition argues that the current grid is inefficient and that making better use of existing assets can significantly reduce costs for consumers.
Forthcoming research from The Brattle Group, to be released by the coalition, estimates that US consumers could save $180 billion over the next decade through grid system improvements.
"We recognize that there's a need to prioritize affordability and do so in a way that really empowers states to make the best decisions," said Ian Magruder, the executive director of Utilize.
Early Legislative Wins
Beyond research, Utilize is working to shape policy and is already influencing action in Virginia, a focal point for the global data center boom.
The coalition helped advance a first-in-the-nation bill (SB621) through the Virginia legislature. The legislation requires major utilities to spell out how much of their grid capacity is being used and to incorporate those metrics into their State Corporation Commission plans and reviews.
The bill is awaiting the signature of Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger. If enacted, Magruder said the coalition aims to use the Virginia framework as a model for other states.
