The official Tesla mobile app has added a long‑requested capability: it now shows in real time when FSD is engaged via a new "Self-Driving" indicator.
The app has shown a moving vehicle using full 3D models for years, but for the first time it also displays the familiar blue path and the "Self-Driving" label whenever FSD is active.
Access is currently limited because the feature depends on both the latest app release and a recent vehicle software update. It arrived with Tesla app version 4.58.5 and also requires software version 2026.20.6.1 installed in the vehicle.
A Closer Look at the Real-Time Animation
X user Jordan Camina (@hletes) spotted the capability and shared details. Notably, it is not restricted to HW4 vehicles like some other Self-Driving features, including the Self-Driving app.
Camina posted a thread showing the mobile app rendering his HW3 Model S traveling down a road with the FSD status highlighted.

"Self-Driving" appears in bright blue below the speed readout when FSD is in use, similar to the vehicle’s main touchscreen, and the glowing blue navigation path is shown.
Although more visual updates to the app have been hinted at, this release does not add other 3D elements. The on-screen vehicle still only moves straight and does not depict traffic lights or other objects.
Fleet-Wide Availability
Camina tested the feature on a Hardware 3 (HW3/AI3) vehicle. That car has not yet received Tesla’s new FSD v14 Lite build that began rolling out to older legacy models last week. Instead, it is still running FSD 12.6.4, which was the latest software update available for HW3 vehicles for about 14 months before Tesla pushed the v14 Lite package to the public. The new indicator likely requires a change in the data the vehicle sends to the app, which explains why it is not available in previous versions.
It is expected to support all vehicles, regardless of whether they use Intel or AMD, and whether they are HW3 or HW4.
Owners have requested a remote FSD indicator for a long time. One owner, @ryanjaycowan, even created a design concept last year that closely resembles the final implementation.

Beyond the visuals, Tesla app version 4.58.5 also added phrases indicating plans to use the cabin camera for FSD authentication, enabling verification of who is behind the wheel before FSD is allowed. Combining identity verification with the new FSD indicator could make it easier to track a car’s status, especially as consumer vehicles begin operating independently as driverless robotaxis.
