Elon Musk Admits He Got 'Too Involved' in Politics

Elon Musk discussed his time in Washington and how engaging in politics affected his focus. He shared the remarks during a recent interview that covered artificial intelligence, regulation, and collaboration across the industry.

Speaking with Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief at The Economist on The Insider, Musk reflected on his role in government initiatives. "I think I got a little too involved in politics. I got carried away, frankly. The goal with the DOGE stuff was to try and do something about the deficit," he said.

By "deficit," Musk was referring to a shortage of government officials with technical expertise and real-world experience in emerging technologies like AI, which has left regulators struggling to determine when new models are safe for public release.

The Impact on Tesla and the Return to Tech

Musk’s political involvement began in early 2025 as a special government employee, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump Administration to streamline federal spending. Tensions soon escalated into public disputes and a falling out with President Trump, shaking investor confidence as Tesla stock stumbled amid the drama.

During that period, backlash against Musk — and, by extension, Tesla — intensified as some buyers linked brand identity directly to Washington politics. After his brief stint with the Trump Administration, Musk repeatedly said he would step back from political activities to refocus on his core businesses. Relations with the federal government appear to have improved since, with Musk recently joining President Trump on an official visit to China.

Working Together on AI Safety

Much of the interview centered on the current state of AI and the need for leading companies to cooperate to manage risks. Looking ahead, Musk emphasized open communication among top AI developers despite rivalries. “If we have to talk, we’ll talk,” he said, adding that industry rivals should “set aside personal differences for the good of the world".
