Tesla has rolled out a significant update to its Robotaxi app that enables direct booking and ride controls for the upcoming Cybercab. The release arrives just hours before Tesla’s launch event for the purpose-built autonomous two-seater in Austin, where the vehicle is set to make its public debut.
The update follows Tesla starting to add Cybercabs to its Robotaxi fleet in Texas earlier this week, signaling that a commercial launch is near. With support for Cybercab rides already live, commercial trips in steering wheel-less Cybercabs appear ready to begin during or immediately after today’s launch presentation.
Tesla also updated the Robotaxi app’s listing on the App Store to introduce the vehicle, stating:
“Our Robotaxi vehicle lineup now includes Cybercab, our first purpose-built autonomous vehicle. Designed for safety, accessibility and comfort, Cybercab is bringing autonomy to everyone and every ride. Schedule your next ride today to experience the future of autonomy for yourself-only available in the Robotaxi app.”
Choosing Between Cybercab and Model Y
The refreshed ride-ordering screen lets riders choose the vehicle type. Passengers can toggle between a gold Cybercab, which seats up to two passengers, or a standard Model Y robotaxi that accommodates up to four people.
Service policies have been revised to reflect the absence of human controls. Tesla updated its in-app terms to specify age requirements for Cybercab rides:
“Minors under the age of 13 are not permitted in a Cybercab robotaxi vehicle (vs 8 for Model Y robotaxi).”
For now, the option to book a Cybercab is expected to remain exclusive to the Austin operational zone. While Tesla recently expanded Robotaxi geofences in both Austin and Dallas, fleet deployments will likely center around the company’s Texas headquarters before rolling out to other cities.
Color-Matched Cybercab Pickups and New In-Cabin Controls
Finding your ride on busy streets is getting a visual upgrade with Cybercab. When the vehicle arrives, the app switches to a dedicated “Enter” screen with directional arrows and distance indicators to guide you to the pickup location.
The Cybercab was previously spotted testing its RGB front light bar, and the multi-color functionality is a core part of the pickup experience. The front light bar glows a unique color, and the phone screen displays the exact matching color to identify your ride. Quick-action buttons in the app let riders honk the horn, flash the headlights, or open the doors and rear trunk directly from their device.
Once inside, the app becomes a passenger command center. A live route card tracks progress and works alongside the new vehicle icons recently added to the Robotaxi UI’s mini-map (likely to better differentiate between Cybercabs and Model Y robotaxis). Riders can interact hands-free by saying “Hey Grok” or by tapping a button in the app to ask questions or adjust cabin functions. The lower panel supports searching streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music and adjusting audio volume. It also appears riders will be able to modify interior ambient accent lighting to set the cabin mood during their commute.
