Tesla Insurance Is Coming Soon to Washington

Tesla is preparing to bring its real-time, in-house auto insurance to Washington, giving local owners the opportunity to reduce monthly premiums based entirely on driving behavior.

According to a report from Coverager, Tesla General Insurance has submitted a new private auto insurance program to state regulators, with a proposed start date of September 1, 2026. If approved, Washington would become the 16th U.S. state to offer Tesla Insurance.

A Data-Driven Coverage Expansion

Tesla underwrites its own insurance program in most markets, allowing it to bypass traditional insurance frameworks. The rollout has accelerated in recent months: in March, Indiana became the most recent state to receive Tesla Insurance, following earlier launches in Tennessee and Florida. The Florida expansion was particularly noteworthy because it marked the first new state for Teslas in-house coverage in three years.

With Washington added, the coverage map now includes:

  • Arizona
  • California*
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Washington (coming soon)

*Tesla Insurance in California does not adjust monthly premiums based on real-time driving habits due to state regulations.

Scoring Your Drive for Big Discounts

The regulatory filing says Washingtons program will feature two evaluation tracks: a standard Safety Score and Teslas specialized Safety Score with Full Self-Driving (Supervised). This structure suggests discounts for regular FSD use, consistent with how Tesla Insurance works in other states, directly rewarding owners who use the companys advanced driver assistance system.

Tesla Insurance bases monthly premiums on a blend of real-world metrics, with FSD usage playing a significant role. Earlier this spring, Tesla also rolled out Safety Score 3.0, which updated the methodology so that every mile driven with FSD (Supervised) enabled earns a perfect 100. Drivers who log more than half of their monthly miles using FSD can typically receive an extra 10% discount on key portions of their policy.

If the September launch proceeds as planned, Tesla drivers in Washington state should be able to shop for policies within the Tesla mobile app by the end of the summer.
