Tesla Expands Powerwall 3 Backwards Compatibility to North America

Powerwall 3 can now be added to Powerwall 2 systems in North America

Tesla has enabled backwards compatibility for its home batteries in North America, letting existing Powerwall 2 owners expand their storage by installing a Powerwall 3.

The update was announced by the official Tesla Energy account on X, stating:

“You can now increase your storage capacity with a Powerwall 3.”

This follows an earlier rollout in Australia, where households received the capability via a dedicated software update (version 26.26). The same functionality is now reaching Powerwall installations across North America.

How the mixed setup works and supported configurations

Previously, expanding a Powerwall 2 system posed challenges because Powerwall 2 uses AC coupling and external solar inverters, whereas Powerwall 3 includes an integrated solar inverter, a different battery architecture, and higher continuous output.

With the latest update, Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 can operate together as a single, unified battery within the Tesla app. To use this feature, existing systems must be updated to software version 26.26 or later.

Supported configurations include up to four Powerwall 2 units, one Powerwall 3, and up to three stackable Powerwall 3 Expansion units at a single site, enabling a wide range of system sizes without discarding existing hardware.

A few hardware rules apply:

• Installations require Backup Gateway 2; older Gateway 1 units and legacy Neurio meters are not supported.
• On three-phase grid connections, continuous power output from the Powerwall 3 will be capped at 5 kW.
• Existing Powerwall 2 units keep their original warranty, while the added Powerwall 3 and Expansion hardware include a 10-year warranty.
• Installation must be completed by a Tesla Certified Installer.

Expanding whole-home energy resilience

Backwards compatibility aligns with broader flexibility across Tesla’s energy ecosystem. Tesla recently launched vehicle-to-home support with Cybertruck, allowing Powerwall 3 owners to plug in the truck and use its battery pack as an additional home power source during blackouts.

By enabling older residential systems to operate alongside newer hardware, owners can increase capacity without the expense and complexity of replacing an entire setup.
