Giga Texas update coming July 7

Tesla is preparing a significant announcement related to its Austin headquarters. Tesla Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, said during a recent interview that a major update about Gigafactory Texas is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7.
The comment surfaced in an interview clip shared by Tesla enthusiast @herbertong on X. In the preview, Moravy stated that "a week from Tuesday, there will be some cool news about things happening around Giga Texas as part of the scaling effort." The interviewer also indicated that the full conversation contains more than a dozen notable revelations and confirmations.

Production context at Gigafactory Texas
Moravy tied the timing to the facility’s ongoing scaling, implying a manufacturing focus. The site marked its 500,000th vehicle in October 2025 and can currently support a weekly output of up to 10,000 vehicles, along with localized 4680 battery cell manufacturing.

Likely manufacturing targets
The leading candidate appears to be the Cybercab. Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi officially entered mass production at Giga Texas back in April, and the assembly lines have been steadily ramping up since. With official first responder documentation for the vehicle now released, expanding dedicated assembly lines to support a fleet launch would align with the ramp.
There are other possibilities. Tesla has long-term ambitions for a 10-million-units-per-year Optimus line in Texas. However, initial production runs for the humanoid robot are slated for Fremont first, so a Texas expansion for Optimus may come later. Alternatively, the update could involve dedicated lines for the three-row, six-seat Model Y L that Tesla plans to launch in the U.S. later this fall.
Texas has become the home base for Tesla’s Robotaxi service, which is expected to be headlined by the Cybercab. While less likely, the announcement could address Cybercab-powered driverless ride-hailing operations. It could also reflect a larger financial investment in in-house battery cell manufacturing at the facility.
The most recent expansion discussed for Giga Texas was a new public-facing Customer Delivery Center. Given the size of the Austin campus, any added manufacturing footprint is likely to be substantial. Details are expected on July 7 about how the factory layout is evolving to support the next generation of autonomy.
