First Look at Tesla's Custom Wraps Feature in the Mobile App [VIDEO]

Tesla is about to make customizing the vehicle visualization much simpler: owners will be able to apply a custom “skin” to their cars directly from a smartphone, without any in-cabin hardware steps.

The option to add custom wraps through the Tesla app is scheduled for the Summer 2026 Software Update, expected to begin rolling out as 2026.26. It also requires the latest app update, version 4.59.0.

Ditching the USB Drive

Custom wraps first arrived in the 2024 Holiday Update, but applying them required a cumbersome USB workflow: remove the car’s USB drive from the glovebox, connect it to a computer, copy the wrap files into a specific folder, and plug the drive back into the vehicle.

Initially, custom wraps were limited to Cybertruck. Support subsequently expanded to Model 3 and Model Y, and more recently to Model S and Model X. Because a wrap is effectively a photo, the Summer 2026 Software Update will allow selecting an image on your phone and sending it over the air to the vehicle to use as the skin.

How the New App Integration Works

In the Tesla app, custom wraps reside in the recently added “Creations” section, which now includes a dedicated “Wrap” tab. This is the same area where Photobooth captures and Sketchpad drawings are saved.

From Creations > Wrap in the app, tap Upload and choose a custom wrap from your phone’s gallery (learn how to make your own). After selecting an image, the app shows an interactive preview of your vehicle with the design applied. You can rotate the 3D model from any angle before choosing Upload & Apply Wrap or Upload Only. When confirmed, the app transfers the required files directly to the car.

If you selected Upload Only, you can then go to Toybox > Paint Shop > Wrap in the vehicle to view and apply it. If you selected Upload & Apply Wrap, the skin is applied immediately to the vehicle visualization on both the phone and the in-car display.

The capability supports both AMD Ryzen and older Intel Atom infotainment systems. For Intel-powered vehicles, it is the first item available in the Creations menu, since Photobooth and Sketchpad remain limited to newer AMD processors.

What’s Next for In-App Customization?

Other personalization options have not yet moved into the app. Custom license plates and custom lock sounds still require configuration in the car. With the growing tie-in between the app and custom visualizations, lock sounds and custom plates could be added to the app in a future update.
