Everything Announced at Tesla's Terafab Event

Elon Musk unveiled TERAFAB at the Seaholm Historic Power Plant in Austin, Texas, presenting what he characterized as the most ambitious effort yet to manufacture chips and scale compute, uniting Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX.

Galactic Civilization

  • Musk’s overarching aim is to advance humanity into a galactic civilization and a multi-planet species.

  • The intent is to turn science fiction into science fact.

  • To frame the scale, he referenced the Kardashev Scale:

    • Type I: Harnessing all the energy on a planet

    • Type II: Harnessing all the energy from a star

    • Type III: Harnessing all the energy in a galaxy

  • Humanity has not yet reached Type I.

  • Fusion on Earth generates less energy than 99% of the Sun’s output.

  • Electricity production on Earth is roughly a trillionth of the Sun’s production; even boosting current output by 1 million would still amount to only one millionth of the Sun’s output.

  • Against the scale of the Universe, Earth’s conflicts are minuscule.

  • Scaling civilization ultimately requires scaling power in space.

  • The vision includes establishing cities on the Moon and Mars.

  • It also involves dispatching spacecraft to rendezvous with other starships so people can travel wherever they want to go.

Three Pillars of the Vision

  • Achieving these goals by harnessing solar power calls for the collective capabilities of Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX.

  • These organizations have repeatedly achieved what many thought impossible, including EVs, reusable rockets, and a GW-scale training cluster.

Tesla

  • 8 million vehicles delivered to date; current production is 2 million per year.

  • Developing AI vehicles and the Optimus humanoid robot.

  • 109GWh of energy storage deployed globally.

  • Gigafactories scaled up in record time.

  • Operates the first and only lithium refinery in the US.

xAI

  • Built the first GW-scale AI training cluster.

  • Operates the largest coherent supercomputer.

  • Described as the only company able to build orbital AI compute at scale.

SpaceX

  • Developed humanity’s first reusable rockets.

  • Restored human spaceflight capability to the US.

  • Currently launches 90% of global mass to orbit.

  • Runs the world’s largest space-based internet network.

  • Hosts the largest PCB manufacturing site in the US.

  • Built Starship, the world’s most powerful rocket.

Scaling Challenge and the TERAFAB Solution

  • Reaching the target scale implies 1 billion Optimus robots for physical work, 10 million tons of mass to orbit per year, and more than 1 TW of solar power.

  • Projected compute demand from Tesla and SpaceX is 1TW.

  • Earth currently adds about 100–200GW of compute per year, limited by local grids.

  • Global AI compute production is only around 20GW per year.

  • Existing fabs would deliver just 2% of the ultimate goal.

  • Solar generation and launch capacity are being addressed by Tesla and SpaceX, but a terawatt of compute remains the missing piece.

  • Musk plans to keep working with suppliers such as TSMC and Samsung, purchasing as many chips as they can produce as they expand.

  • Because supplier expansion will not be fast enough, TERAFAB is proposed as the remedy.

  • TERAFAB is a joint program between Tesla and xAI/SpaceX.

  • It is positioned as the largest chipbuilding effort in history by a wide margin.

  • The envisioned scale exceeds other plans by several orders of magnitude.

  • The objective is to reach a terawatt of compute production per year.

Advanced Technology Fab

  • The facility will be an Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, just outside Giga Texas.

  • It will encompass chips, memory, and lithography masks.

  • Co-locating logic, memory, and packaging enables rapid testing and iteration.

  • Within a single building, teams can create the mask, fabricate the chip, test it, and refine the design.

  • This loop of recursive improvement is emphasized as a key advantage.

  • The fab will explore non-traditional chip types that press against physical limits.

Next-Gen Chips and Space Compute

  • TERAFAB is slated to produce new chips:

    • AI5: Powering FSD & Optimus.

    • AI6: Powering Optimus.

    • D3: Powering Compute in Space.

  • Looking ahead, humanoid robots are expected to need 10 to 100 times more chips than cars.

  • Over time, space compute is projected to dominate total compute.

  • Starship will carry large payloads dedicated to space-based compute.

AI Sat Mini

  • AI Sat Mini targets 100kW, with future satellites moving into the megawatt range.

  • Each AI Sat Mini is expected to be approximately 1 ton.

  • When deployed with solar panels and radiators, it will span a width greater than the height of Starship V4.

  • SpaceX plans to leverage its experience with heat rejection in space to manage cooling.

Advantages of Space Compute

  • Space-optimized chips will be hardened for the environment and tailored for in-orbit operation.

  • They can run at higher power and temperatures in space.

  • There is effectively no power constraint in space.

  • With continuous sunlight, these systems can run 24/7.

  • Battery backups are unnecessary to keep systems online.

  • Space solar is cheaper than terrestrial solar because it requires no framing or heavy glass for weather protection.

  • Greater economies of scale are achievable in space, whereas on Earth physical sites introduce constraints.

  • It may be only a few years before launching chips to space is cheaper than building an equivalent ground facility.

Lunar Mass Driver and Future Abundance

  • Beyond TERAFAB, the next milestone is reaching a petawatt of compute.

  • To get there, Optimus and human crews on the Moon would send compute assets into deep space.

  • Rockets are unnecessary on the Moon; payloads can be accelerated using an electromagnetic mass driver.

  • This infrastructure would reduce costs further.

  • The intention is to accomplish this within Musk’s lifetime.

  • The result envisioned is an era of Amazing Abundance, enabled by sustainable energy, space travel, and AI & Robotics.

  • That future would let humanity go beyond the Moon, beyond Mars, and even journey through Saturn’s rings.
