Tesla's New Grok Vehicle Commands in Action [VIDEO]

Conversational control in Tesla vehicles has taken a major step forward. Instead of relying on rigid legacy voice commands for core functions like climate control, drivers can now speak naturally to Grok.

Grok vehicle commands are rolling out as part of the Summer Update, which began reaching customer vehicles as software update 2026.26.

Hands-Free Vehicle Control Through Natural Speech

When SpaceXAI’s Grok chatbot made its automotive debut last summer, it functioned primarily as a screen-based conversational assistant. Tesla later added navigation commands, enabling drivers to set up and edit routes by speaking to Grok. With location-based reminders introduced in software update 2026.14 earlier this spring, you could ask Grok to remind you to take your gym bag out of the trunk when you arrive home or to buy milk on your way back.

The Summer Update significantly broadens these abilities, tying Grok into core vehicle hardware and software. Drivers can place phone calls, search for and queue music, open the glovebox, adjust the climate system, and more—using casual sentences. For example, it can turn off the HVAC system.

In practice, the system can process complex, multi-part requests at once. You can ask it to navigate to work, adjust the cabin climate, and change the Steering Weight setting from Light to Heavy simultaneously, and it handles all three together.

Beyond basic toggles, Grok is expected to control seat heating and ventilation, and it can also open specific menus on request. Saying, "Can you show me the Steering Weight in Settings?" immediately opens the corresponding Dynamics tab on the touchscreen. You can then follow up by asking it to interact with what’s on the screen. To start a conversation, say the recently added "Hey Grok" wake word; saying "goodbye" dismisses the assistant. With calls, media playback, and hardware controls added to its existing navigation and reminder features, it now covers most of the average Tesla driver’s most-used voice commands.

Global Rollout and What’s Coming Next

Grok was exclusive to the U.S. at launch before expanding to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and select European and Asian countries. Alongside the new vehicle controls, the Summer Update further expands Grok availability across Europe and to additional Asian markets, including India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. These capabilities will be available everywhere Grok is offered.

Deeper integration with core vehicle systems sets the stage for future upgrades. Earlier this year, Elon Musk confirmed that Full Self-Driving integration for Grok is in development, later noting that Tesla owners will be able to control FSD by talking to Grok sometime this fall.

As voice interaction moves from rigid commands to conversational co-piloting, hands-free control of driving modes and cabin settings—and eventually FSD—will become second nature.
