Tesla has updated pricing for its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, raising costs for short rides.
The per-mile charge remains $1.00 per mile, but the base fare to begin a trip has increased to $3.25.
Since the service launched, Tesla has revised its pricing multiple times.
The New Pricing Math
Previously, the distance-based model charged a $1.00 base fare plus $1.00 per mile. The base fare is now $3.25.
Because the $1.00 per-mile rate is unchanged, the higher base fare has a larger effect on short trips.
Examples using $3.25 + (miles × $1.00):
- 2-mile trip: $5.25 (up from $3.00).
- 5-mile trip: $8.25 (up from $6.00).
- 10-mile trip: $13.25 (up from $11.00).
The longer the distance, the smaller the relative impact, but riders taking 1- to 2-mile hops will notice the higher initial fee.
Robotaxi Pricing History
This change follows a series of quick adjustments since the service officially launched in Austin on June 22, 2025.
The service began with a flat $4.20 fee, a nod to Elon’s signature memes and humor, then moved to a flat $6.90 as the geofenced area first expanded.
In July 2025, Tesla adopted more realistic, dynamic pricing and dropped the flat fee. The distance-plus-base model matches typical approaches from other autonomous operators and ride-hailing services, including Uber, Lyft, and Waymo.
Battling High Wait Times
The $1.00 base fare introduced last year made short trips extremely inexpensive. The new $3.25 base fare points to a more sustainable structure.
The update may also discourage very short rides. Tesla hasn’t been actively adding additional Unsupervised Robotaxis or even Supervised Robotaxis to the active fleet, leading to wait times of upwards of 10-15 minutes for many users in Austin.
