Tesla Model Y named Drive’s 2026 Car of the Year
Tesla’s best-selling SUV continues its global momentum. Drive, a leading Australian automotive outlet, has officially awarded the Tesla Model Y its 2026 Car of the Year. The recognition marks a major milestone in Australia, signaling that the electric SUV has advanced beyond the "tech enthusiast" niche and into mainstream attention.
Drive’s overall honor compares all category victors to identify the model that "moves the game forward the most for Australian new car buyers." For 2026, the publication said there was no doubt about which vehicle had "launched it into a new era."
A run of major accolades
This trophy adds to a strong month for Tesla’s core lineup. Earlier this month, the Model Y was named the best electric vehicle of 2026 by Consumer Reports, while the Model 3 earned Edmunds' Top Rated Electric Car award for the second year in a row.
Tesla also managed to take the top two spots in a major 2026 EV satisfaction study, underscoring record owner sentiment. Drive noted that the Model Y was already Australia’s best-selling EV in 2025, and that recent updates moved it from "science-fiction motoring to real-world implementation."
Why the Model Y leads the pack
According to the judges, the Model Y blends technology and day-to-day usability especially well. "The all-new Tesla Model Y takes the already much-loved EV benchmark to new heights," the outlet said. While the screen-only cabin can seem intimidating initially, the team found the interface "surprisingly intuitive."
Drive highlighted the 2025 Model Y Juniper refresh as a turning point. The reflective rear light bar and commanding road presence set a new bar for lighting design. Inside, the panoramic glass roof, heated seats in both rows, and a dedicated rear entertainment screen for climate and movies make it a "default choice for a reason," the publication wrote.
One decisive contributor was access to advanced driver-assistance features. In Australia, owners can subscribe monthly to Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Drive called the software "astonishingly clever," and, while it does not yet deliver full autonomy, it demonstrates how far driver-assistance technology has progressed.
Making EV ownership easy
Beyond software, the nationwide Supercharger network remains a major advantage. The Model Y was praised for being "efficient, quiet and easy to live with," helping make the shift from a gasoline vehicle feel nearly effortless.
"Class-topping technology delivers an ownership and ease-of-EV lifestyle that is second to none," Drive concluded. By pairing leading-edge capability with a price point accessible to families, Tesla’s formula is clearly yielding results. As the lineup continues to evolve, it is becoming more difficult for legacy brands to match the same mix of value and innovation, and critics currently view the Model Y as the benchmark.
