Tesla is widening the availability of its in-car artificial intelligence companion. According to the release notes for software update 2026.20, the xAI-made Grok chatbot that has been part of Tesla’s cabin experience for close to a year is now reaching several additional international markets.
Update 2026.20 started rolling out to vehicle owners last week. Beyond expanding Grok to more countries, the release also adds automatic dashcam clip encryption for improved privacy and new parental controls to restrict app access.
Global Expansion Details
Grok first launched in the United States, then expanded to Canada. Tesla subsequently launched Grok with navigation commands in Europe and later brought the chatbot to Australia and New Zealand.

With update 2026.20, the assistant is arriving in additional territories, including Chile, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Hong Kong, with the possibility of other regions in this wave. Some areas still do not have access, such as Norway and the Czech Republic.
Core Features and Voice Commands
The expansion delivers the full Grok feature set in these regions. The chatbot handles open-ended questions and navigation commands, supports the hands-free “Hey Grok” wake word, and includes location-based reminders introduced with the Spring 2026 Software Update (version 2026.14 and later).

Grok can be launched from the app launcher, by long-pressing the steering wheel voice button, or by saying "Hey Grok." Owners can customize the assistant’s voice and personality, including creative profiles such as Storyteller or Unhinged.
When set to the Assistant profile, Grok can add and edit navigation destinations. It also supports advanced location-based reminders, so you can say "remind me to pick up milk when I'm near home," or "remind me to take the groceries out of the frunk when I get home." The feature requires either an active Premium Connectivity subscription or a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Future Capabilities
Grok is currently in an early Beta. It does not yet support voice commands for vehicle controls beyond basic route planning, but Tesla intends to expand its capabilities.
Future updates are expected to enable control of core vehicle functions such as HVAC and lighting, as well as Full Self-Driving (Supervised), through Grok, positioning it as a broader in-cabin manager.
