Musk Discusses Optimus Gen 3 Roadmap, AI & Universal High Income

At the 2026 Abundance Summit, Tesla CEO Elon Musk outlined an ambitious plan for the company’s AI and robotics efforts, confirmed the production schedule for Optimus Gen 3, and described his view of a post-capitalist economy.

In a conversation with Peter Diamandis, Musk shared details about xAI, the Tesla Bot initiative, and how rapidly scaling humanoid robots could reshape the global economy.

Optimus Gen 3 - Coming This Summer

Musk said Tesla is in the final stages of developing Optimus 3 and claimed it will be the most advanced robot in the world when released.

He described a manufacturing plan that starts with a slow ramp this summer. He expects high-volume production by the summer of 2027, with about 10 million square feet of factory space dedicated exclusively to the robot.

Despite the surge in automated labor, Musk said Tesla is not planning human layoffs. Instead, he expects robotics integration to make Tesla’s output per human extremely high.

Hard AI Takeoff

Musk said the AI sector is undergoing a hard takeoff. He expects recursive self-improvement—where AI models train and improve successive models without a human in the loop—to be fully automated by the end of this year or next year at the latest.

He also highlighted xAI’s newest model, Grok 4.20, saying it is currently the best model in the world at predicting outcomes.

Musk acknowledged that xAI is behind competitors in coding capabilities. He noted he was late to the interview because he was leading a large all-hands focused on programming to catch up, a target he expects to reach by the middle of the year.

Universal High Income

As AI and Optimus scale, Musk reiterated his view that the cost of living will fall sharply, resulting in significant deflation. Because humanoid robots could produce goods and services at a rate that far exceeds the money supply, he envisions a future of Universal High Income.

"I think money will stop being relevant at some point in the future.”

He predicted that governments would simply issue money to citizens because AI-driven output would fully saturate human desire. In this post-scarcity scenario, he said superintelligent AI would not care about currency; it would only care about power and mass, wattage and tonnage.
