Appearing virtually to accept Forbes' top innovator award, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gave an interview spanning multiple announcements, from indications of a near-term SpaceX initial public offering to a vision for orbital computing over the coming decade.
The SpaceX Quiet Period
Addressing recent rumors of a potential IPO, the Forbes interviewer asked Musk whether SpaceX was preparing to file its S-1 paperwork this week. An S-1 is the foundational document required for a company to go public in the United States.
"I'm not allowed to comment on these things," Musk stated. "Like a quiet period or something to that effect."
Legally mandated quiet periods typically occur when an IPO or major public filing is imminent, adding to speculation that SpaceX is moving toward the public markets, potentially as early as the next several weeks.
Expanding the TERAFAB Vision
Shifting from finance to infrastructure, Musk outlined how to power an AI surge on Earth. His proposal calls for launching ten million tons of solar-powered AI data center satellites into orbit. By capturing uninterrupted solar energy, these orbital arrays could produce up to a terawatt of power per year.
He added that the concept ultimately extends to a dedicated base on the Moon, specifically intended to manufacture and launch space-based AI chips, removing the terrestrial bottleneck entirely.
AGI and Optimus
On the software and robotics front, Musk offered new timelines. He predicted that artificial general intelligence will be unequivocally smarter than humans in every metric within one to two years. Looking ahead to 2031, he expects digital intelligence to vastly exceed the sum of all human intelligence.
To interface with this capability, Musk plans to deploy Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot. He estimates that between 100 million and one billion humanoid robots could be operating on Earth by the end of the decade. He also believes this surge in labor will cause the global economy to double in size within five to seven years.
Appealing the OpenAI Verdict
Musk also discussed the latest development in his dispute with Sam Altman and OpenAI, noting that the judge dismissed his lawsuit on statute-of-limitations grounds rather than on the merits. He confirmed that an appeal is already underway and cautioned that permitting OpenAI to convert to a for-profit entity would create a dangerous precedent.
