Tesla dashcam footage related to traffic stop and acquittal

Tesla’s onboard cameras are often associated with catching parking-lot mishaps and road-rage incidents, but in Florida they became crucial evidence that kept a driver out of prison.

According to FOX 35 Orlando, Winter Springs resident Kevin Finley was found not guilty of felony fleeing and reckless driving after a judge reviewed footage from his Tesla. The criminal case followed an arrest at gunpoint in his own driveway and lingered for nearly two years.

An Unmarked Police Vehicle and an Arrest at Gunpoint

Finley was driving home after dropping off his children at school when he passed a vehicle stopped in a median, assuming it was disabled or preparing for a U-turn. The vehicle turned out to be an unmarked police cruiser.

An officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop and, believing Finley was trying to get away, said over the radio, "He's trying to take off on me." Unaware that he was being pursued, Finley continued driving normally. After pulling into his garage, he heard sirens, opened the door, and was confronted by officers with guns drawn.

“This is like, a simple — argumentatively a traffic violation. And now I have a gun in my face, and I'm arrested in my driveway, and my neighbors are watching,” Finley recalled. He was booked on felony fleeing and criminal reckless driving, which carried up to 90 days in jail.

Video Evidence Clears All Charges

Finley consistently said he never saw emergency lights or heard a siren. In court, his defense presented the car’s video logs, which showed only a brief split-second where the patrol car’s lights were visible before winding roads and nearby structures blocked the unmarked vehicle from view.

Persuaded by the footage, the judge acquitted Finley on all charges before the case reached a jury. Finley is now considering a civil lawsuit against the police department.

The Power of Onboard Dashcam

Tesla Dashcam functions as an integrated drive recorder, using the front, rear, and side cameras to continuously capture surroundings while driving. When parked, Sentry Mode monitors the area and saves video whenever motion or impacts occur nearby.

Recent software updates expanded capabilities further: drivers can access up to 24 hours of rolling footage for Dashcam and Sentry Mode as long as they’re using large enough USB or SSD storage drives, and Tesla enabled automatic encryption for Dashcam clips for added privacy.

Reviewing evidence is easier with a zoom tool in the in-car Dashcam Viewer, and the company recently added real-time telemetry overlays to saved Dashcam clips, showing speed, steering wheel angle, and FSD state on the file.

For Finley, the car’s always-on witness ultimately meant the difference between potential jail time and a full acquittal.
