Tesla’s European sales rebounded sharply in May, with new registrations rising across multiple key markets. According to a report from Reuters, the upswing extends the recovery that began in April, when Tesla set new sales records in several countries.

A Look at the May Numbers

France led the surge: registrations jumped 655% year over year to 5,446 vehicles, marking the company’s best May on record in that market. Since the start of 2026, Tesla has sold more than 20,000 cars in France, placing it well ahead of other European countries on a year-to-date basis.

Elsewhere, registrations climbed 136% to 1,750 vehicles in Denmark and 113% to 1,690 in Spain. In Denmark, the Model Y was the top-selling vehicle overall for the month, and the Model 3 placed fifth.

Scandinavia also advanced, with Sweden up 71% to 858 vehicles. Norway, historically among Tesla’s strongest markets in the region, recorded a 29% increase to 3,345 vehicles.

Italy was the outlier, posting a slight year-over-year decline in May, although its year-to-date sales remain above 2025 levels.

Rising Demand and Production Ramps

Part of the annual jump reflects a lower baseline in early 2025, but underlying consumer demand has strengthened. Supportive policies, regional subsidies, and higher fuel costs are nudging more buyers toward electric vehicles.

The momentum coincides with progress at Giga Berlin, which built its 750,000th vehicle in May and is expected to increase production by 20% to meet growing regional demand.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) rollout is also gaining traction in Europe, with Estonia recently becoming the latest (and third) EU country to approve the feature for public use.

A fuller picture of May’s results will emerge as major markets such as Germany and the U.K. publish official figures, but early data indicates a clear turnaround. After losing roughly half of its European market share in 2025 amid a stagnant product catalog and rising competition, Tesla now appears poised for a highly competitive summer sales season.
