When Tesla introduced the Cybertruck, one of its headline capabilities was bidirectional charging, known as Powershare, which can run high‑draw appliances or serve as whole‑home backup during outages. A prior software limitation prevented owners from using the truck alongside a home battery. That limitation has now been removed: Tesla announced that whole‑home backup integration between Cybertruck and Powerwall 3 is live. “This extends your home backup by over 3 days, equivalent to 9 additional Powerwalls,” Tesla said.
Tesla also said the feature will expand to Powerwall 2+ “later this year.” The integration was originally targeted for the third quarter of 2025, while the initial rollout for Powerwall 3 arrived in Q3 2026.

Eliminating Gateways and Simplifying Hardware Requirements
Cybertruck was the first Tesla to debut Powershare. Since then, support has also arrived for the Model Y Performance and the three‑row, six‑seat Model Y L via dedicated Powershare adapters.
Previously, Cybertruck owners who wanted whole‑home backup needed a dedicated Powershare Gateway to handle islanding and grid disconnection. For homes already equipped with a Powerwall, a separate standalone gateway is not required. With this update, Powerwall 3 owners can plug in their Cybertruck, and the existing Powerwall Gateway will manage grid disconnection automatically. A compatible Tesla Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3 paired with the truck is required.

Plugging in enables two‑way energy flow. The Cybertruck can supply power to the home directly or charge the Powerwall, and the home can draw from both battery packs simultaneously during an outage.
Overcoming Software Roadblocks
Blending vehicle batteries with stationary home storage required navigating utility regulations and updating communication between vehicle inverters and home gateways to avoid electrical conflicts. Lead Cybertruck engineer Wes Morrill explained:
“This presented a few different microgrid stability challenges and in particular ensuring robust communication and coordination to react to load changes in real time took some effort, but the energy team and vehicle team worked hand in hand to get it to out to the customer fleet,”

The launch resolves a longstanding incompatibility between these products and aligns with broader home‑energy efforts. Tying a 123 kWh truck battery into the home turns the vehicle into a large energy reservoir, and pooled vehicle‑plus‑home storage can keep a residence powered when the grid goes down.
