Tesla Model 3

Tesla has removed all Model 3 inventory listings from its Canadian website, clearing the slate ahead of changes to Canada’s automotive trade policies.

The timing aligns with the launch of Canada’s new quota system for Chinese-built EVs, indicating Tesla is preparing to resume imports of Giga Shanghai–assembled Model 3s into Canada.

The Great Inventory Vanishing Act

Over the weekend, shoppers in Canada saw the Model 3 inventory across major markets disappear from Tesla’s site. Although the company has not issued a statement, the unsold units that were previously visible appear to be heading back to the United States.

Custom-ordering a Model 3 remains possible via a direct URL, but the option is hidden from the site’s navigation. The configurator still shows tariff-inflated pricing for U.S.-built vehicles, starting at $79,990 CAD. Clearing existing stock suggests Tesla is preparing for a major price adjustment tied to the new federal trade arrangement.

The 6.1% Window

The inventory shift coincides with a federal policy that took effect on Sunday, March 1st. After months of negotiations and a 100% surtax imposed in 2024, Canada has reopened access to Chinese-assembled EVs under a capped import-permit program.

Under the new rules, up to 49,000 Chinese-built EVs can enter Canada annually, subject only to a standard 6.1% most-favoured-nation tariff. The rollout is phased, with the first 24,500 shipment-specific import permits issued on a first-come, first-served basis between March 1st and August 31st.

Because there is no per-brand allocation at launch, Tesla is well positioned to capitalize on the initial quota.

Return of the Giga Shanghai Model 3

Before punitive tariffs effectively halted Chinese EV imports in 2024, Tesla led in bringing China-assembled vehicles to Canada. Importing from Giga Shanghai enabled competitive pricing and the use of Chinese-built and sourced batteries, including Chinese LFP batteries from CATL.

With the first-come, first-served permit system now active, Tesla is likely moving to secure a significant share of the initial 24,500 permits. In the coming days, the company is expected to relaunch the Model 3 in Canada with a substantially lower price, replacing the inflated pricing with low-tariff vehicles from Giga Shanghai.

This shift could also make room for additional trims and variants in Canada, including the first North American launch of the Model Y L.
