What appears to be the first U.S. sighting of a Model Y L test vehicle has drawn widespread attention in North America. The stretched, six-seat version of Tesla’s best-selling SUV was seen traveling northbound on Interstate 280 in California, clad in black camouflage typically used during final validation testing.
The discovery was shared on X by Michael Carroll (@michaelrcarroll), who captured an image of the vehicle during testing. This public road appearance follows a prior report of the vehicle being seen behind the gates of Gigafactory Texas, strengthening expectations of an imminent North American launch.
The Stretched Family Hauler
The Model Y L first debuted in China last summer, quickly becoming popular with families who had outgrown the standard five-seat layout. In contrast to the somewhat cramped seven-seat option offered on the current U.S. Model Y, the "L" variant provides a true 2-2-2 seating arrangement across three rows. This is enabled by a wheelbase that is 150mm (5.9-inch) longer and an overall body length that is roughly 7 inches longer than the standard model.
Positioned as a more premium experience, the Model Y L features a larger 16-inch central touchscreen, adjustable second-row captain's chairs, and a suspension tuned for comfort over sporty handling. Since its initial launch, it has expanded into Australia, New Zealand, and several Asian markets, and received EU type approval late last year, but it remains unavailable to North American buyers.
Filling the Model X Void
The timing is pivotal for Tesla’s lineup. Now that the company has officially discontinued the Model S and Model X, there is a notable gap for shoppers seeking a high-capacity, premium SUV. While the Model X offered the most space, its discontinuation leaves the Model Y L as the logical option for families needing three rows and a more upscale cabin.
Elon Musk has previously teased a larger model that he says is "way cooler than a minivan," but that vehicle likely remains further out. In the near term, introducing the Model Y L in North America would help retain customers who might otherwise consider electric alternatives from Kia or Hyundai that provide more interior volume.
Late 2026 or Sooner?
While Musk previously stated that the Model Y L wouldn't arrive in the U.S. until late 2026, if ever, this new public road testing suggests the timeline may have moved up. Tesla often uses on-road validation to confirm that a vehicle’s software and hardware are ready for local road conditions and regulations.
If the Model Y L follows the pattern of earlier rollouts, an official announcement could come by the end of the year. For North American families squeezed by the standard Y’s dimensions, spotting a "long boi" on I-280 is an encouraging sign—it now seems less a question of if the Model Y L will reach the U.S. and more a question of when.
