Tesla China Hits 2026 High With Major Sales Surge in May

Tesla’s China operations began the summer with a sharp jump in deliveries. According to CPCA figures reported by CnEVPost (via @SawyerMerritt), Tesla China’s wholesale volume reached 85,982 vehicles in May. That is a 39.44% year-over-year increase and the highest monthly total so far this year.
These are wholesale totals that include both domestic retail sales in China and vehicles exported to other markets from Gigafactory Shanghai.
Regaining Upward Sales Momentum
May’s result was 8.18% higher than April, signaling a return to growth after a temporary dip. Even as local demand softened in April, Giga Shanghai set an overall record for April output after delivering 79,478 units. May’s performance builds on and surpasses that level.

For the first five months of the year, Tesla China’s total wholesale volume reached 378,858 vehicles, up 29.36% from the same period last year.
This strength in China aligns with a broader rebound: in May, sales across key European markets also climbed, including a 655% year-over-year surge in France, with additional increases in Denmark, Spain, and Sweden.
Market Strategy and FSD Expansion
To support demand, Tesla introduced a new “Easy Loan” financing option in China during May. For a base Rear-Wheel-Drive Model 3 priced at 235,500 yuan (~$35,000 USD), the program reduces the minimum down payment to 55,900 yuan (~$8,200 USD) for a five-year term.
The company is also laying the groundwork to bring its latest Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software to the country. It has updated Chinese owner’s manuals and its website with references to features specific to FSD v14 and “Tesla Assisted Driving,” which appears to be the local name it will use for FSD.
A wider public rollout of FSD in China has long been in limbo, but the gears now seem to be turning. Tesla recently started ramping up recruitment of local FSD testers to validate the software on Chinese roads, suggesting a full public launch is drawing closer as factory production numbers climb.
