Tesla CarPlay in 2026: Hack Demo, Official Status and Your Options
Tesla CarPlay ran natively on a modified Tesla, but official CarPlay still has no date. What's real, what's reported, and how to get CarPlay today.
Quick answer
No, Tesla still does not offer Apple CarPlay from the factory. What owners saw this week was a demo by two independent developers who got CarPlay, Siri and AirPlay running natively on a modified Tesla screen. You can't download it, and neither developer has said whether other owners will ever get it.
Official CarPlay is still in testing. Bloomberg reported in November 2025 that Tesla was testing standard CarPlay (not CarPlay Ultra) in a window inside its own interface, and the end-of-2025 target was missed. No date has been announced. If you want CarPlay now, the practical way to get it today is a plug-in CarPlay adapter, which also gives you full-screen mirroring and Android Auto.
One short video, and the oldest Tesla wish came back: "When do we get CarPlay?"
On October 13, a developer posted a clip of Apple CarPlay running as a native app on a Tesla with the AMD Ryzen infotainment computer: no dongle, no browser, with Siri answering through the car's own microphones. A day later a second developer showed a Mac screen mirrored to the car over AirPlay. The clips were shared widely on X and picked up by Tesla news sites. Here is what is real, what is still a rumor, and what you can do today.
What owners are saying
Owners on Reddit
One owner said CarPlay would make navigation smoother, because they could stay in the phone maps they already use instead of switching to a separate mapping app.
Owners on Reddit
Another owner welcomed the news mainly for one reason: they want Waze on the car's big screen.
Owners on Reddit
Others point to the built-in navigation itself, saying it can be weak at times. For them, CarPlay would be a backup option, not a replacement for Tesla's system.
Does Tesla have Apple CarPlay in 2026?
Not officially. No production Tesla ships with CarPlay or Android Auto, and Tesla has not announced a release date. Tesla's own system covers music, podcasts, video and navigation, but it does not mirror your iPhone apps.
That gap matters to buyers. A Strategic Vision study cited by InsideEVs found that 21% of Tesla owners name CarPlay as a top feature they want in their next car, compared with 3% of other buyers. A 2024 McKinsey survey, cited by TechRadar, found that roughly a third of buyers worldwide would not consider a car without CarPlay or Android Auto.
What did the CarPlay hack actually show?
According to Not a Tesla App, the demo ran on a modified Tesla with the AMD Ryzen infotainment computer. The developer says CarPlay is built into the car's software as its own app, not run through a browser or an add-on box.
- A CarPlay icon in the app launcher opens a window on the right side of the screen, with Tesla's vehicle controls still on the left. It can expand to full screen.
- Phone, Messages, Apple Music, Podcasts and third-party apps such as Google Maps all ran inside it.
- Siri worked through the car's built-in microphones, and the developer says lossless audio plays through the car's speakers.
- In one clip, the cabin ambient lighting reacted to music from Apple Music.
- A separate AirPlay demo mirrored a Mac desktop to the car screen. It is an early preview with black borders.
The catch is simple. Both demos run in a modified software environment, and neither developer has said whether other owners will get these features. The second developer also says he found no existing AirPlay code in Tesla's firmware, despite rumors.
Is Tesla working on official CarPlay?
Yes, according to reports, but Tesla has not confirmed a date. In November 2025, Bloomberg reported that Tesla had started testing CarPlay internally. As summarized by Drive Tesla and TechRadar:
- CarPlay would run in a window inside Tesla's existing interface, not replace it.
- Tesla would offer standard CarPlay, not the more advanced CarPlay Ultra.
- Full Self-Driving (Supervised) would keep using Tesla's own navigation.
- The plan was not final, and the release could slip.
It did slip. Autoblog reported in February 2026 that Tesla had missed its end-of-2025 target. Bloomberg had described a problem in testing: turn-by-turn guidance did not work properly with Apple Maps while Autopilot was engaged. Apple has since shipped a Maps update in iOS 26, so the remaining wait may depend partly on how many iPhones are updated.
Not a Tesla App now expects official CarPlay to arrive with this year's Holiday Update. Treat that as an educated guess from a publication, not a Tesla announcement. Tesla has already missed one CarPlay target, and even when it ships, updates reach cars in stages.
Will official CarPlay make a CarPlay adapter pointless?
Probably not, based on what has been reported so far. Official CarPlay and a plug-in adapter solve different parts of the problem:
- Window vs. full screen. Reports say Tesla's version will run in a window inside its own interface. An adapter like Space Box can mirror your phone full-screen.
- iPhone only vs. both phones. The reports describe CarPlay only, with no mention of Android Auto. An adapter supports both.
- Some day vs. today. Tesla has not named a date or a list of supported cars. An adapter works today, once it's plugged in and paired with your phone.
- Extras. Space Box also has Netflix and YouTube built in, plus voice control through Siri, Google Assistant or ChatGPT.
If Tesla's CarPlay arrives, you can decide then; an adapter still covers Android Auto and full-screen mirroring. If it slips again, you haven't spent another season switching between your phone and the car's map.
Will my Tesla be able to get CarPlay?
Nobody outside Tesla knows yet. Drive Tesla expects official CarPlay to be limited to cars with the newer AMD Ryzen infotainment computer, not older Intel Atom cars. That is a reasonable guess, since the hack demo also ran on AMD hardware, but it is not confirmed.
To check your car, go to Controls > Software and tap "Additional Vehicle Information." It lists your infotainment processor. If it says AMD Ryzen, your car has the hardware every CarPlay path so far has needed, official or not.
How can I use my iPhone apps in a Tesla today?
You have three realistic routes. Only one of them gives you CarPlay today:
| Option | What you get | Cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla's built-in apps | What you get: Apple Music, Spotify, streaming video, Tesla navigation and phone calls over Bluetooth | Cost: Included; some streaming needs Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi | The catch: No Waze, no third-party phone apps, no phone mirroring |
| Plug-in CarPlay adapter | What you get: Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto today, full-screen mirroring, Waze, Messages, Netflix and YouTube | Cost: One-time purchase (Space Box: $139.99) | The catch: Needs the AMD Ryzen infotainment processor; check your model year |
| Wait for official CarPlay | What you get: Standard CarPlay in a window inside Tesla's interface, per reports | Cost: Not announced | The catch: No date, no list of supported cars; windowed and CarPlay only, per reports |
How do I find my Apple Music library in a Tesla?
Many owners don't realize Apple Music is already built in. Since update 2026.32, your own library is there too. Per the release notes:
- Open Search in the media player.
- Select Apple Music.
- Tap Library to see the songs, albums and playlists you've added.
That covers music. It doesn't cover the reasons most owners actually ask for CarPlay: Waze, Google Maps, Messages, Android Auto, or seeing your phone full-screen. For those, you still need CarPlay itself.
Should you wait or add CarPlay now?
Owners have been asking for CarPlay for years, and Tesla still hasn't given a date. Waiting makes sense only if Tesla's maps and built-in apps already do everything you need.
If you use Waze every day, rely on CarPlay in your other car, have an Android phone, or want your phone apps on the full screen, adding CarPlay now is the practical move. A plug-in adapter takes no wiring or coding, and you don't have to wait on Tesla's timeline. Check that your car has the AMD Ryzen processor first (Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information), then you're set.
