For more than a decade, Elon Musk has adhered to a single marketing approach across Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and xAI, emphasizing product quality over traditional advertising.
Tesla has experimented with online advertising on YouTube and Google Ads, but on Sunday a 30-second Starlink commercial aired during the Super Bowl—the first time a company led by Elon Musk purchased traditional TV ad space on that stage.
Available Everywhere
The commercial took a straightforward approach. Rather than highlighting Mars colonization, a lunar base, AI datacenters in space, or reusable rockets, it emphasized Starlink’s practical value for Super Bowl viewers.
The spot conveyed that viewers dissatisfied with their current ISP could switch to Starlink in two minutes and that the service is available everywhere.

This marks a clear shift from earlier Starlink messaging, which focused on unconnected rural users, adventurers, and aero/nautical travelers. The Super Bowl ad targets suburban and urban customers frustrated with legacy providers such as Comcast, AT&T, or Spectrum.
It reframes Starlink from a niche option for remote settings into a mainstream utility provider.
Why Now?
The ad slot was estimated at $7 million, indicating that Starlink’s business has entered a more mature phase.
Early adopters—households without internet access or those with a clear reason to subscribe—are largely onboard; further growth will require taking market share from entrenched cable and fiber incumbents.
The move also comes ahead of SpaceX’s potential IPO after its absorption of xAI, aligning with the brand-building many companies undertake before going public.
It also signals confidence in the constellation’s capacity; advertising to roughly 100 million Americans on Super Bowl Sunday implies readiness to handle a surge without speed or signal degradation.
The End of an Era
Tesla has recently dabbled in paid marketing via Google Ads and social media, but a Super Bowl commercial represents a significantly bigger step.
As SpaceX evolves into a global connectivity provider, it is adopting more conventional public-relations and advertising playbooks alongside its technology focus.
