Native vehicle dashboards are beginning to receive real-time road hazard notifications. Rivian recently confirmed that native Waze alerts will be added to its in-cabin navigation system for R1 and R2 vehicles in an upcoming software update.

Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid announced the integration on X, stating:

“Real-time alerts from Waze are coming to R1 and R2 in-vehicle navigation, starting with speed cameras and police reports in the 2026.31 OTA update. More data and alerts to follow!”

The announcement quickly drew interest from Tesla owners, who have long requested Waze functionality on their center touchscreens.

What Tesla Already Offers in Its Navigation

Tesla has avoided supporting third-party apps like Waze but has gradually expanded its own crowdsourced navigation capabilities.

In 2023, Tesla added speed camera and construction icons, displaying visual warnings for speed traps, red light cameras, and active road work.

These features were available only in select regions at launch, depending on data availability. More recently, releases such as the Summer 2026 feature drop have extended these road alerts to additional regions.

To access this routing data, drivers must enable Online Routing under Navigation in the vehicle’s Settings and have an active Premium Connectivity subscription ($10/month or $99/year in the U.S.). While Tesla can use static map data and neural networks to detect stop signs and traffic lights, live speed traps and temporary work zones depend on third-party aggregated databases, in this case Google.

Expanding Real-Time Data

Despite Tesla’s built-in speed camera and construction indicators, Rivian’s Waze integration is broader. Rivian is incorporating live, community-reported police sightings, accidents, road debris, and more directly into its maps, while Tesla continues to focus on less time-sensitive information, such as road closures and speed cameras.

Tesla drivers seeking that level of live detail still face limitations without a dedicated Waze app or data integration. Reports suggest Tesla is working with Apple on native CarPlay support, but with no release date, many rely on workarounds like the Tesla Android project to get CarPlay on the center touchscreen for Waze access, or they simply use their phones.

If data integrations remain unavailable, expanding the built-in hazard database appears to be the next logical step for Tesla. Adding user-reported police traps, road debris notifications, and disabled vehicle alerts directly to the Tesla map would improve situational awareness for drivers and FSD without requiring phone-based solutions.
