Cybercab Joins Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet With Cheaper Fares
After a private unveiling in downtown Austin on Thursday, Tesla opened Cybercab ride bookings to the public citywide at 5 p.m. local time today.
This marks the first opportunity to hail a mass-volume vehicle designed from the outset without a steering wheel, pedals, or other conventional driver controls. The two-seat vehicle operates entirely on Full Self-Driving, providing a hands-off ride from curb to curb.


Tesla first started adding Cybercabs to its Texas Robotaxi fleet earlier this week. The public launch coincides with a Robotaxi app update that added support for Cybercab rides, including a pickup feature where the car’s front light bar illuminates a unique color to identify your ride. Cybercabs can now be hailed throughout the full Robotaxi geofence in Austin, which recently expanded to about 264 square miles.

Cybercab Rides Cost 35% Less Than Model Y
Beyond the futuristic hardware, the key attraction is price: booking a purpose-built Cybercab is noticeably cheaper than selecting one of the retrofitted Model Y robotaxis in service so far.
Testing the updated app in Austin, community member @DavidMoss shared fares for the same route. For an identical trip to Lustre Pearl East, a four-seat Model Y Robotaxi showed a fare of $12.10, while the two-seat Cybercab came in at $7.77.
That equates to a discount of roughly 35% for choosing the dedicated two-seater. When Tesla unveiled the Cybercab in October 2024, Elon Musk said the operating cost for Cybercabs at scale “is probably going to be around 20 cents a mile.” Although Tesla has not yet reached that scale, the Cybercab’s lower manufacturing overhead, lighter curb weight, and modular construction are enabling lower prices than traditional ride-hail offerings and even Tesla’s existing robotaxis.
Previously, Robotaxi fares used a $3.00 base + $1.40/mile formula. Some community members now speculate that Model Y robotaxis charge a $7.00 base price while the Cybercab retains the $3.00 base; more rider data is needed to confirm the exact Cybercab pricing.

Passenger Experience and Under-the-Hood Tech
Early riders describe a premium, comfort-oriented cabin. The interior feels especially open, with legroom that exceeds the Model Y. A soft suspension tune smooths rough city pavement, and a 22-inch center display manages entertainment and route tracking.

The Cybercab is the first Tesla with built-in Starlink connectivity, enabling reliable 4K video streaming during rides even in cellular dead zones. Accessibility touches include tactile Braille labels on critical buttons such as door releases and the emergency stop, and wide, upward-swinging doors to accommodate mobility equipment or folded wheelchairs.

Beneath the minimalist body, the vehicle is engineered for high uptime without human intervention. It uses steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire, a simplified electric drive unit with improved windings, and a more efficient thermal loop to reduce cooling demand. According to Tesla, Model Y robotaxis accumulated more than one million unsupervised rider miles before the Cybercab rollout. With public bookings now active, Austin riders can take an autonomous trip for less than the cost of a standard Model Y ride.
