Walmart charging guide

Walmart built a fast-charging network. Half the cords aren't Tesla's.

Most Walmart chargers have two cords: one NACS, one CCS1. Your Tesla fits one of them. A small adapter makes it both.

Quick answer

Yes, a Tesla can charge at Walmart. Walmart says its fast chargers have a built-in NACS plug, so Tesla drivers do not need an adapter. But about half of the cords at a typical Walmart site are CCS1, and the network is still new.

A CCS1 adapter lets your Tesla use every stall at Walmart and the other 37,000+ CCS1 fast chargers across the U.S. You will not need it every trip. It is the backup for the day the NACS stall is taken or broken.

7 things to know about charging at Walmart

Walmart started building its own fast-charging network in April 2025. This is where it stands and what it means for a Tesla.

  1. Walmart opened its 100th fast-charging site in August

It was a Supercenter in Monument, Colorado, on August 21, 2026. By the end of the month a tracker counted 109 sites in 21 states.

Walmart and Sam's Club have more than 5,200 U.S. locations, and the company has said it wants chargers at thousands of them by 2030.

    • 109 sites
    • 21 states
  2. Around 910 stalls, 8 to 16 at most sites

A typical site has four dual-cord chargers, or eight stalls. Larger sites go up to 16. Chargers come from ABB and Alpitronic and are rated up to 400 kW.

That is a lot of stalls in a parking lot where you were going to stop anyway.

    • about 910 stalls
    • up to 400 kW

  3. Half the stalls. Or all of them.30-day money-back guarantee. Free US shipping.

    Try OmniVolt
  4. Every charger has two cords: NACS and CCS1

A Walmart site with eight stalls has four NACS and four CCS1. Walmart's own page confirms native NACS and CCS1 connectors, and no J1772 or CHAdeMO.

Walmart says Tesla drivers can plug into the NACS cords without an adapter.

    • NACS + CCS1 on every charger
  5. The CCS1 half is where an adapter pays off

With a CCS1 adapter, your Tesla can use every stall, not just the NACS half. That matters on a busy holiday afternoon.

It also gives you a backup. If one cord is down or the stall next to you is taken, the other cord on that charger may be fine.

    • 2x the stalls
  6. The Walmart app runs everything

Plug in, open the Walmart app, scan the QR code on the charger screen, pick your connector and pay from your Walmart Wallet. Pricing is per kWh, with no session fee.

Trackers put the average at about $0.46 to $0.47 per kWh, with off-peak near $0.29. Walmart+ members get 10% off when they pay in the app.

    • about $0.46/kWh
    • 10% off with Walmart+
  7. A backup for the day it matters.Nothing to install in the car. Fits in the glovebox.

    Try OmniVolt
  8. The network is young. Have a Plan B

Early drivers report mixed results. One widely shared report from a New Jersey site described five failed attempts with the app, while other drivers charged there fine. Walmart is adding card readers, but not every charger has one yet.

Add your payment method before you arrive, check recent reports on PlugShare, and know where your next fast charger is.

    • Check PlugShare first
  9. Beyond Walmart, 37,367 CCS1 chargers

The U.S. had 37,367 CCS1 fast-charging connectors on September 1, 2026, and 74% of the new non-Tesla fast-charging connectors in Q3 2026 were CCS1. An adapter works at those too.

Walmart has no J1772 Level 2 chargers. Hotels, workplaces and public parking do, and OmniVolt includes a J1772 end for them.

    • 37,367 CCS1 connectors

Two cords. Only one fits your Tesla.

At Walmart, about half of the stalls use Tesla's plug. With an adapter, the other half works too.

With OmniVolt:

  • Every stall at a Walmart site
  • A backup if a cord or the app fails
  • CCS1 networks beyond Walmart

Without an adapter:

  • NACS stalls only
  • Waiting when those are taken
  • Walmart is one network of many

Check your Tesla in 30 seconds

Most Teslas built in the last several years can charge at CCS1 stations through an adapter. Confirm yours in the car.

  1. ControlsTap Controls, then Software on the touchscreen.
  2. Vehicle infoOpen Additional Vehicle Information.
  3. CCS supportLook for CCS Adapter Support. “Enabled” means you are ready.

Teslas built before about 2020 may need a one-time hardware retrofit from Tesla for CCS1 fast charging. J1772 Level 2 charging does not need it.

Questions, answered

Can a Tesla charge at Walmart?

Yes. Walmart's fast chargers have native NACS cords, and Walmart says Tesla drivers can plug in without an adapter. You start and pay through the Walmart app.

How much does charging at Walmart cost?

Pricing is per kWh and shown on the charger and in the app. Trackers put the average at about $0.46 to $0.47 per kWh, with off-peak near $0.29. Walmart+ members get 10% off in the app.

Do I need an adapter at Walmart?

Not to charge, since the NACS cords work directly. An adapter lets you use the CCS1 half of the stalls too, gives you a backup if a cord fails, and opens CCS1 networks beyond Walmart.

How do I know my Tesla supports it?

Open Controls, Software, Additional Vehicle Information and look for CCS Adapter Support. If it says Enabled, you are ready. Cars built before about 2020 may need a one-time retrofit from Tesla for CCS1 fast charging. J1772 Level 2 charging needs no retrofit.

Does an adapter make my Tesla charge faster?

No. Charging speed is set by your car and the station. The adapter is a passive pass-through, so it lets them connect without slowing them down.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping is free in the U.S., with delivery in 7 to 15 business days.

Use every cord at every stall.

Walmart's NACS stalls work for your Tesla already. OmniVolt covers the rest, at Walmart and everywhere else.
