What’s Different in the North American Tesla Model Y L

Tesla’s long-wheelbase crossover is beginning to appear on U.S. roads. With production accelerating at Gigafactory Texas, new details clarify how the North American Model Y L differs from versions built abroad.

The three-row, six-seat configuration made its U.S. debut last month with an exclusive Launch Series trim. Display vehicles have already reached stores and showrooms nationwide, with customer deliveries slated to begin in September.

Longtime Tesla watcher @SawyerMerritt shared an overview of the North American build, noting, “The third row space will surprise you, the second row is the most comfortable that Tesla has ever offered, it has some premium features that even the 6-seat Model X didn’t even offer, and the sound system is the best of any Model Y. It is very well built.”

Key Differences Between Giga Texas and Giga Shanghai Builds

Although the North American Model Y L keeps the same roomy three-row, six-seat layout that has been popular in China and other Asian markets, the Texas-built version includes several regional updates.

One change is the introduction of 20-inch Uberhelix Wheels with a fully enclosed aero design. Upgrading from the standard 19-inch Machina 2.0 Wheels carries only a 5-mile range reduction, moving the EPA estimate from 325 miles to 320 miles.

Wireless phone charging also differs by region. Giga Shanghai builds introduced next-generation wireless pads with active air-cooling and a peak 50W output, while the North American Model Y L currently includes standard 15W, non-cooled pads.

Tesla VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy said North American smartphones have not adopted higher-wattage Qi charging as quickly as in Asian markets. Tesla intends to upgrade North American Model Y L builds to actively cooled 50W pads once faster wireless charging becomes more common locally. Engineers also confirmed the upgraded hardware will expand across the rest of the vehicle lineup around the same time.

How the Model Y L Compares to the Standard Model Y

Beyond factory-specific differences, the Model Y L introduces notable dimensional and interior upgrades over the standard Model Y. The vehicle is 7 inches longer overall with a 6-inch longer wheelbase. It also integrates the rear spoiler into the body shell rather than attaching it as a separate piece, adding 15 miles of range. The same spoiler houses the rear brake light, which engineers said helped increase headroom in the third row.

Inside, the Model Y L packs a 19-speaker audio system with a subwoofer. A second-row center-channel speaker is mounted directly below the rear touchscreen, a first for Tesla. Passengers also benefit from added clearance, with three more inches of third-row headroom than the base Model Y — even exceeding the now-discontinued Model X.

These comfort improvements accompany Model Y L thermal efficiency upgrades that help keep the cabin cool while using less power overall. According to Moravy, the Launch Series is already nearly sold out, indicating strong demand ahead of first deliveries in September.
