Tesla Model Y

Norway continues to lead the world in electric vehicle uptake, with new registration data indicating an almost complete shift away from fossil fuels. According to a report from The Driven, battery electric vehicles represented 97.8% of all new passenger car registrations in May (via @SawyerMerritt). Momentum remains high, with the country’s year-to-date EV market share at 98%.

Data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) shows that of 15,560 total passenger vehicles registered in May, 15,210 were all-electric. Only 200 hybrids were registered, while a combined 150 new petrol and diesel cars were sold nationwide during the month.

Tesla Secures the Top Spot

Tesla finished as Norway’s best-selling car brand for the month, capturing 21.5% of the overall market with 3,345 registrations. This continues a multi-month pattern of regional strength, with the Model Y also dominating Norwegian sales charts in March, a period when Tesla outsold every other car brand combined during the first week.

The brand’s May lead was driven largely by the Model Y, which alone accounted for 20.1% of all vehicle registrations with 3,126 units—roughly one in five new passenger vehicles.

The month also delivered a significant milestone for Tesla’s crossover: the Model Y became the first electric vehicle to surpass 100,000 total registrations in Norway.

Shifting Competitive Dynamics

While Norway has long been one of Tesla’s strongest European markets, local sales volume rose a comparatively modest 29% year-over-year in May. Other European markets grew faster, with France posting a 655% year-over-year sales surge during the same month.

Broader market competition also intensified as more manufacturers expanded their electric lineups. Toyota secured second place with 12.7% of all new vehicle registrations, driven largely by its Urban Cruiser and C-HR+ electric SUVs. Volkswagen followed in third with 11.3% of the market.

As legacy automakers expand their electric offerings, the market is becoming increasingly varied. Even so, Tesla’s manufacturing strengths and the enduring popularity of the Model Y continue to keep the brand ahead as Norway edges closer to a fully zero-emission fleet.
