Tesla is increasing production in Germany to meet sustained Model Y demand in the region. According to a report from CNBC, the company announced on Thursday that Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg will raise output by an additional 20% to reach 7,500 vehicles per week starting in October. The plant will also recruit 1,000 additional employees to support the ramp.
This step follows a previously announced 20% production increase at Giga Berlin that likewise targeted 1,000 new hires. In the first quarter, the factory averaged nearly 4,700 vehicles per week, producing over 61,000 Model Y units. The latest jump comes shortly after the site celebrated 750,000 vehicles built since operations began in 2022, and the powertrain division reached 1 million drive units manufactured on-site.
Expanding Manufacturing and Workforce
In May, Tesla said it would increase funding for local battery cell manufacturing. Together with earlier vehicle capacity expansions, these three production steps are expected to create a total of 3,500 additional jobs in the short and medium term across vehicle and battery manufacturing. On the battery side, the company plans to install up to 8 GWh of production capacity at the plant by 2027.
Scaling production and hiring also align with earlier commitments. Elon Musk previously tied factory expansions to a clear political condition, and the workforce delivered when it voted against a union majority during recent works council elections.
European Demand and the Model Y L
Expanding local assembly capacity aligns with continued demand for the Model Y across Europe. While current lines focus on standard configurations, added staffing and higher throughput could create room for another model.
With credible sources indicating that the new six-seat Model Y L is launching in North America this fall, expanded capacity in Germany could eventually support a European introduction. The long-wheelbase variant already secured EU type approval last year, making it a strong candidate for local assembly once the October expansion is fully underway.
