Tesla Engineer Hints at Being Able to Leave FSD Feedback Without Disengaging

Tesla’s FSD team is known for being highly responsive to user feedback on X, and a recent interaction suggests that a new feature could be in development: allowing users to leave feedback without disengaging FSD.

In one of the posts on X, a user inquired if Tesla could enable users to leave an FSD voice note without disengaging FSD.

Tesla Senior AI Engineer Yun-Ta Tsai, who recently confirmed that voice notes are indeed listened to, responded to the suggestion with a simple but optimistic, “Noted.”

Feedback on the Fly

Currently, Tesla’s Voice Note feature is activated only after a disengagement. If the car performs something risky or incorrect, or when you take control by braking, pressing a button, or turning the wheel, a prompt will appear on the screen asking, “What happened?” You can then press the right scroll wheel to record a brief audio clip explaining the error.

However, there is a flaw in the recent builds of FSD. Many users find themselves not needing to disengage even when there’s something for which they wish to leave a voice note, potentially improving the vehicle’s handling in certain situations. These types of soft failures in recent FSD iterations are not dangerous, but they remain incorrect or frustrating.

Examples include:

  • Incorrect lane selection

  • Driving too slowly or tentatively

  • Taking an unusual route through an intersection

  • Failing to exit the passing lane

In these situations, the seasoned FSD user typically allows the car to continue to see if it corrects itself. They may not touch the brake or the wheel, which means no disengagement signal is triggered. The system assumes all went well, and therefore lacks a feedback mechanism.

This presents a paradox—Tesla’s advancements are unintentionally reducing the amount of feedback they receive. The more the system improves, the harder it becomes to report the lingering edge cases that need addressing.

Bringing Back Snapshot

Although Yun-Ta Tsai's acknowledgment was brief and did not confirm a future feature, it indicates that the Tesla AI team is reviewing feedback from X, and recognizes the potential value in implementing this feature. This would not be the first time such a function exists.

Tesla’s internal testers, current employees, and some early-access testers have access to a specific camera icon on their UI. Tapping this button flags the current moment and uploads a snapshot of the vehicle’s data to Tesla’s engineering team without canceling or disengaging FSD.

This capability would provide Tesla with a vast amount of data concerning comfort, confidence, and planning—metrics that are notoriously challenging to measure through raw telemetry alone. It shifts the focus from “safety” (did we crash?) to “quality” (did we drive well?).
