Thomas Dmytryk, a director who helped build Tesla’s over-the-air (OTA) infrastructure and the Robotaxi ride-hailing platform, has announced his departure from the company. Dmytryk leaves after 11 years; his title for the past seven months was "Director," following a prior role as Senior Software Engineering Manager.
From Niche to 10 Million
In a LinkedIn farewell, he recalled joining the engineering team in early 2015, when Tesla offered only the Model S and Model X.
"When I joined, Tesla was a niche luxury automaker with only 50K cars delivered and lots of ambitions," Dmytryk wrote. "My 5-person team owned OTA, connectivity, and commands running on a very simple stack. My ambitions at the time were simple: Automate everything. Pioneer software-defined vehicles. Modernize apps and infra."
Over time, that original 5-person group and its architecture scaled to serve a fleet rapidly approaching 10 million vehicles worldwide. App-based vehicle commands and OTA software updates run through systems his team helped establish.
The Ride Hailing Moonshot
Later in his tenure, his team was tasked with creating the software foundation for Tesla’s Robotaxi network.
"Then came our moonshot: create ride-hailing capability and bring it to the world in a way that has never been seen before," he wrote. "Quickly, we evolved from proof of concept to a full-blown production-ready solution, bringing in more and more teams in the picture until we finally released it to the world."
His exit comes as the ride-hailing network continues to expand and calibrate its pricing model in early markets like Austin.
Retirement
Although he wrote that Tesla’s future is extremely bright and that the company is just getting started, Dmytryk said he is stepping back from Tesla’s intense pace to prioritize family, rather than moving to another role.
"Human life’s always been my North Star, right now I need to be with mines [sic]," he explained.
He also praised the frontline engineers at Tesla and said he will be rooting for them as they advance the company’s work in AI and robotics.
